Fortnite’s Holocaust Museum Sparks Debate Among Players

Fortnite completely took over the world with its battle royale mode in late 2017. However, developers Epic Games have completely changed the gaming industry again with the launch of Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).

Released in March 2023, UEFN has given not only developers, but also your average player the ability to create captivating minigames using Fortnite’s engine.

The possibilities with UEFN are endless, with many creating modes inspired by some of the most popular games in the world. However, one team of developers has taken a different route, which has sparked both interest and controversy.

After releasing The Light in the Darkness — considered to be the first educational game on the Holocaust — Jewish developer Luc Benard along with a team of developers have created a virtual museum within Fortnite Creative to educate players about the Holocaust.

An official release date is yet to be confirmed, although, Bernard revealed that the Holocaust Museum had been approved by Epic Games and is waiting to be published.

“The first Holocaust Museum in Fortnite has been approved today by Epic Games,” he wrote in a tweet. “Super proud that we will be the first to bring something like this to Fortnite’s 400 million + players.” Bernard added: “80% of Americans haven’t visited a Museum. So this is game changing.”

However, despite its educational value, concerns have been raised about the potential for the museum to be used as a “troll hub” for players to mess around. “I play Fortnite quite a bit. I hope this area doesn’t become a hub for trolls but I feel like it will,” one wrote. “This will not end well,” said another.

“I don’t have a great grasp of this game anymore, but I feel like this could go poorly,” a third added.

Responding to concerns, the dev assured that emotes, destruction and weapons have all been completely disabled. “Emotes and destruction and no weapons are enabled in this map. It’s more protected than even memorials where people take selfies,” Bernard responded.

The museum is not just a static display of information either. It also includes interactive elements such as quizzes, puzzles, and challenges that test players’ knowledge of the Holocaust.
