PS5 outsold Xbox Series X/S 3-to-1 in 2023, research firm estimates

PlayStation 5 outsold Xbox Series X/S by almost 3-to-1 this year, according to estimates from research firm Ampere Analysis.

It told the Financial Times that sales of Sony’s console were up about 65 percent to 22.5 million units this year.

In comparison, annual Xbox Series X/S sales reportedly declined by 15 percent to 7.6 million, while sales of Nintendo’s ageing Switch console fell by 18 percent to 16.4 million.

The data was provided to coincide with Sony’s announcement that PS5 has cleared 50 million sales since launching in November 2020.

The console reached the sales milestone just one week slower than PS4, despite having to contend with significant Covid-related supply issues which have now been overcome.

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s head of global marketing, Eric Lempel, told the FT that last month was the biggest November on record for PlayStation sales, measured by both units and revenues.

The company is aiming to ship 25 million PS5 consoles during its current fiscal year ending in March 2024. If achieved, it would beat a 25-year-old console sales record set when the original PlayStation shipped 22.6 million units over a 12-month period.

Lempel also said he’s optimistic the console can surpass PS4’s lifetime sales total of 117 million units.

“I think we have the ability to get there,” he said. “Demand for the [PS5] going into this year was huge . . . Momentum is strong now and it’s continuing.”
