Kojima Productions has teamed up with A24 to bring a live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding to the big screen.
A24 is the film distribution and production company behind movies like Everything Everywhere All At Once, Talk to Me, Uncut Gems, Midsommar, Lady Bird and Moonlight.
“The film promises to delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the ‘Death Stranding,’ which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse,” Kojima Productions said.
Shortly after announcing Death Stranding 2 last December, studio founder and game director Hideo Kojima confirmed that a Death Stranding film was in development too.
Rather than making a big blockbuster movie “with famous actors and flashy explosions”, Kojima said he was “aiming for a more arthouse approach”.
“A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other,” Kojima said in a statement released today. “The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative.
“There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game,” Kojima continued. “The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema.
“We are creating a ‘Death Stranding’ universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”
“I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a ‘Death Stranding’ movie together.

Sony published Death Stranding for PS4 in November 2019 and 505 released it for PC in July 2020. A Director’s Cut hit PS5 in 2021 and PC the following year.
Kojima Productions said today that the game has been played by 16 million players across all platforms, including subscription services like PlayStation Plus and PC Game Pass.
