Ubisoft, Arbitrum & Sequence on Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E • Interview Series

1 week ago 35

Ubisoft, Abirtrum, and Sequence have pooled their resources together to formulate the plans for a brand-new extension to the Captain Laserhawk universe—a move that will reportedly allow the community to influence the game’s narrative through “innovative governance.” To learn more about the forthcoming Web3 venture, I spoke with the three major companies involved in the collaborative effort to expand the beloved franchise.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with us! Before we sink our teeth into the latest developments in the Captain Laserhawk universe, please could you tell us a bit about yourself? Who are you, and what brought you to the world of gaming?

D.G. (Ubisoft): Absolutely! I’m Didier Genevois, the executive producer on the G.A.M.E and I’ve been with Ubisoft for several years, deeply involved in exploring the transformative potential of web3 when it comes to the player experience. I've always been fascinated by how new tech can reshape industries, and gaming has been no exception.

E.A. (Arbitrum Foundation): My pleasure! My name is Elias Abi Daoud, I support Game Growth Marketing for the ArbitrumEcosystem, having joined in the initial launch of the ArbitrumFoundation in March 2023. You could say I was born into the world of gaming, competing and community building over the years in games like World of Warcraft, RuneScape, Hearth Stone, and Pokémon to name a few. Having seen the impact Web3 has on community growth, technology innovation, and user autonomy, I realized it was a clear crossover from the traditional gaming space to help push it into the next inevitable chapter.

C.A. (Sequence): Of course! My name is Carl Aspeling, and I’m the Head of Business Development at Sequence, the leading all-in-one development platform that seamlessly integrates web3 into games. Throughout my career, I’ve worked in different roles in strategic planning, operational management, and business development, contributing to the success and growth of various tech organizations. Combined with my love for gaming and passion for innovative and emerging industries, I value my role in onboarding, monetizing, and retaining players for projects that advance the gaming industry.

Let’s talk about the partnership between the three major parties, Ubisoft, Arbitrum, and Sequence. What brought this collaboration to fruition, and what are you aiming to achieve through this joint venture?

D.G. (Ubisoft): This partnership between Ubisoft, Arbitrum, and Sequence was born out of a shared vision to revolutionize the gaming experience in the Web3 ecosystem. Each partner brings a unique strength to the table, and together, we aim to address some of the critical challenges currently facing the Web3 gaming space.

Arbitrum's scalability solutions are at the core of this collaboration. As one of the most advanced Layer 2 scaling solutions for Ethereum, Arbitrum provides the necessary infrastructure to handle a high volume of transactions efficiently. This capability is crucial for gaming environments where speed and cost-effectiveness are paramount, particularly as we look to onboard millions of players into Web3.

However, as we’ve observed, the Web3 context hasn’t always provided the most seamless onboarding experience for players. The complexity of blockchain interactions, wallet setups, and transaction management can be a significant barrier to entry, especially for players who are new to the ecosystem.

This is where Sequence's advanced technical stack comes into play. Sequence offers a comprehensive and user-friendly wallet and developer toolkit designed specifically to simplify Web3 interactions. By integrating Sequence’s technology, we ensure that players experience a smooth and intuitive entry into the world of Web3 gaming, without the friction that has historically been associated with blockchain technology.

For Ubisoft, this partnership represents an opportunity to explore the forefront of gaming innovation by leveraging blockchain technology to enhance player experiences. We are not just building games; we are creating ecosystems where players can truly own their in-game assets, participate in new forms of gameplay that were previously impossible and engage in decentralized economies.

Through this joint venture, we aim to create a scalable, accessible, and enjoyable Web3 gaming experience that sets a new standard in the industry. By combining Arbitrum’sscalability, Sequence’s seamless onboarding, and Ubisoft’s rich gaming heritage, we are confident that we can deliver an unparalleled gaming experience that will attract and retain players from all backgrounds.

E.A. (Arbitrum Foundation): Sure let’s get right into it. The Arbitrum Foundation had an existing relationship with Sequence, sharing a passion for improving adoption into Web3 gaming through both builders and players. It was amazing to see Ubisoft join the fold with a like minded appreciation for the space, all complimenting each other through technology, game design, and community building.

We aim to work with Sequence to help support Ubisoft’s path into the Arbitrum ecosystem. On top of leveraging the incredible technology offered by Arbitrum scaling solutions, and Sequence's seamless developer tooling, we will facilitate their player-centric approach into governance through many community activations at events both online and in-person.

We expect this partnership will greatly influence the long termadoption of Web3 gaming, and help to break the barriers that we are currently experiencing in this space as it rapidly grows. The Captain Laserhawk G.A.M.E is a perfect funnel for bridging the gap between all types of gamers no matter their interest or fluency of blockchain technology, and its imminent influence on gaming.

C.A (Sequence): The partnership between Sequence, Ubisoft, and Arbitrum is driven by a shared vision and a player-centric philosophy to advance the web3 gaming industry as a collective. By aligning our strengths and ambitions, we’re not just setting out to innovate — we’re committed to moving the needle and shaping the future of gaming.

As pioneers in the web3 space, Sequence has had the privilege of collaborating with Ubisoft on several groundbreaking projects, including Champions Tactics on HomeVerse, an L2 on the Oasys chain. Now, we’re thrilled to extend our partnership with Ubisoft to expand the universe of Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, produced by Ubisoft for Netflix.

In this collaboration, Arbitrum’s role is pivotal. As a leading Ethereum Layer-2 scaling solution, Arbitrum offers ultra-fast, low-cost transactions, powered by its Optimistic Rollup technology. This synergy allows us to provide Ubisoft with the critical infrastructure necessary to handle the high volume of transactions inherent in gaming environments.

This collaboration is particularly significant as Sequence aims to onboard millions of players into web3, where speed and cost-effectiveness are essential for retention and building positive public sentiment. By leveraging Arbitrum’s advanced scalability solutions, Sequence is uniquely positioned to deliver seamless, secure, and cost-efficient gaming experiences on a global scale — enhancing the reach, impact, and enjoyment of Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E.

As advocates for open ecosystems, we wholeheartedly support Ubisoft’s ambitious endeavor with Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E., and we’re grateful to collaborate with some of the brightest minds in gaming and web3 to ensure the successful launch and longevity of this initiative. Our solution empowers Ubisoft to welcome every player into The G.A.M.E. with ease and confidence.

Please could you tell us a bit more about the upcoming addition to Ubisoft’s Captain Laserhawk? What are we likely to find in this latest chapter?

D.G. (Ubisoft): Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E. expands the universe of Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix series – produced by Ubisoft for Netflix and featuring iconic characters from Ubisoft IPs.

The G.A.M.E. is a transmedia gaming adventure where the community drives the narrative through innovative governance.

Players step into the role of a citizen in the dystopian world of Eden – the totalitarian successor to the US. By overcoming challenges across various channels inside and outside the game, players can raise their citizen score and increase their power to shape the narrative.

As the story unfolds, the entire community will have the opportunity to influence the plot and participate in key decision-making moments.

We really want to enhance player experiences from offering deep governance opportunities that empower them to have a real say in the development and evolution of games, to enabling user-generated content (UGC) that allows players to contribute creatively to the game worlds they love, thanks to the Web3 and the way it can redefine the gaming experience.

As we dive into the latest developments of the Arena, the first activation in the G.A.M.E ecosystem, it’s these principles—empowerment, creativity, and interconnectedness—that guide our approach. We're pushing the boundaries of what's possible in gaming, and I’m excited to be at the forefront of this journey, bringing players along for the ride.

We’d appreciate a few quick tips on how to tackle the game, if that’s okay? Do you have any words of advice for those who are looking to grab a copy?

D.G. (Ubisoft): For this one, I’ve asked Ygor to answer.

Ygor: Hello! Ygor here, Lead Game Designer for the game. Captain Laserhawk the G.A.M.E. is still in its early stages, but there are already ways to be a better player and increase your chances of ranking high in the matches!

First and foremost, master the basics. Although the game's controls are fairly straightforward, mastering movement, dashing and shooting is critical. Try to get a feel for the timings and cooldowns, and make sure you understand how this affects your chances of surviving!

Secondly, be mindful of the fact that different arenas have different ingredients. Learn how to take advantage of mirror walls, teleports, and how to avoid traps like the poison gas. The same goes for the different power-ups: collecting them and using them correctly pays off big time.

Last but not least, remember to have fun! Don't take the G.A.M.E. too seriously, but do take breaks if you feel like it. We want you with us for the long run, so don't burnout!

On how to grab a copy; currently the Closed Beta inscriptions are closed, but we might have new calls and new releases in the near future. Stay tuned in our communication channels:

And that's it! See you in the arenas!

So, how’s the fourth quarter shaping up for the team? Do you have your sights set on any other projects outside of the newly established collaboration? If so, please could you tell us a bit more about what it is that you’re working on or aiming to accomplish?

D.G. (Ubisoft): The fourth quarter is shaping up to be an incredibly dynamic and pivotal time for our team. Our primary focus is on the successful launch and smooth operations of our newly established collaboration, ensuring that everything from the technical infrastructure to player onboarding is seamless. Given the scale of what we’re building, this is a critical period where all the groundwork we've laid comes to fruition.

In addition to this, we're also excited to introduce a new and innovative game mode. While I can’t reveal too many details just yet, I can say that this mode is designed to push the boundaries of player engagement and interactivity. It leverages the unique capabilities of Web3 and AI technology, offering players a fresh and immersive experience that builds on the core strengths of our existing game universe.

As we wrap up the year, our goal is to not only deliver on the promises of our current project but also to lay the foundation for the next wave of innovations that will continue to evolve the G.A.M.E landscape. It’s an exciting time for our team, and we’re fully committed to making the most of it.

Would you like to add anything else to the pot before we go ahead and close the book?

D.G. (Ubisoft): Before we close, I'd like to emphasize how excited we are about the future and how we're leveraging Web3 technology to truly elevate the gaming experience. We’re not just experimenting with these technologies; we’re fully integrating them to offer players something genuinely transformative. User-generated content (UGC) and player governance aren’t just buzzwords for us—they're at the heart of what we’re building.
We're giving players the tools to shape the games they love, participate in vibrant digital economies, and enjoy a level of ownership and influence that's never been possible before. This isn't just about making a great game; it's about creating a dynamic, player-driven ecosystem that evolves and grows over time.

I believe we’re only scratching the surface of what’s possible, and I’m thrilled to see where this journey takes us. We’re committed to pushing the boundaries and continuing to innovate, ensuring that our community is always at the forefront of the best that Web3 has to offer.
