Refurbished PS5

Sony will soon begin selling refurbished PS5 consoles and controllers on its official PlayStation Direct website, allowing customers to make a saving of around £90 / $100 over a brand new model. Listings on the page are tagged as "coming soon", with a refurbished PS5 console with a disc drive set to be sold at £389 / $400.

If you opt for a refurbished system, you'll get "a product that works like new with genuine PlayStation replacement parts (as needed) that has been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and tested". You will receive all the cables and paperwork you need for a PS5, and it comes with a 12-month manufacturer's warranty. While there's no guarantee the PS5 you receive will be in tip-top condition — the site says "Certified Refurbished products may have minor cosmetic imperfections" — it will have been cleaned and tested to make sure it works before it's shipped out to you.

"All Certified Refurbished products will come with the necessary accessories, cables and manuals. All PlayStation Certified Refurbished products are packaged in its own branded Certified Refurbished packaging and will be sent to you with the 1 day express or 2 day standard shipping options available on PlayStation Direct."

The same goes for refurbished PS5 DualSense controllers, with the standard white and black pads selling at $60, and other colours like purple and pink priced slightly higher at $65. The refurbished PS5 controllers only appear on PlayStation Direct in the USA; it's not clear yet if they'll be available in other territories. A 12-month warranty is again included with the controllers, just like the main consoles.

Since manufacturer Sony has only ever done PS5 price increases rather than drops, this is one route you could take to get a current-gen machine for slightly cheaper. Would you opt for a refurbished console? Let us know in the comments below.
