Baldur's Gate 3's First Custom Maps Portend Endless D&D Adventure

With Larian allowing modders to have at Baldur's Gate 3 for about a week now, the results are already looking quite promising, indeed, with detailed custom maps beginning to emerge. Heroic modders are attempting to take us where even the developer dare not tread, and with mod support coming to PS5 next month, console-bound adventurers can join in on the fun.

Spotted by Dexerto (thanks, IGN), a couple of custom maps have surfaced: one, a castle by the sea, and the other, the infernal realm of Avernus. If someone isn't already working on a full-scale recreation of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn in the BG3 engine, by the way, let's get on that and pronto.

In our 10/10 review of Baldur's Gate 3, we wrote: "Forget Baldur's Gate, let's go back to Amn: a platform and template now exists for a larger D&D exploration in the coming years, which is kind of incredible in its own right. It's complicated, but the principles are simple and sound."

Pre-release, we could not have predicted the year that would follow, with Larian becoming a bonafide industry darling, proving its GOAT status by walking away from Baldur's Gate at the top of its game. But our dream of a D&D platform built on the bones of BG3 seems closer than ever, even if it didn't quite take the form we expected.
