Sony's Third-Party Chief Explains How PlayStation Makes PS5 the Best Place to Play 1

Vanishingly few games on PS5 are actually exclusive, but Sony has done an outstanding job since the start of the generation of setting its system apart. A lot of this has revolved around the unique features of the DualSense controller, and PlayStation’s Global Head of Third-Party Portfolio Shawne Benson is responsible for a lot of the outreach that occurs here, alongside her team.

As she explains in an interview with Boardroom, the division’s goal is not to tell great creators how to make great games – but to ensure their software is elevated by the features and functions of the PS5. As an example, she explained that the team provided feedback to Stray developer BlueTwelve during development, and suggested it could use the controller’s adaptive triggers to reflect the sensation of a cat scratching the carpet.

“Those are the kinds of moments where we can give [developers] advice that is very console-specific,” she said. “What we don’t do is tell them how to make their game because they’re the experts at making a great game. We just give them tips and tricks on how to be best on PlayStation.”

Benson added that one of the trickier issues her team faces is limited bandwidth, and balancing support for the projects Sony is playing an active role in promoting with all the other great games on the console. “We only have so many games we can really put our chips against,” she lamented. “[But] there have been so many great games that don’t become part of a deal that we still do a lot of cool stuff with. In fact, our State of Play has a lot of titles in there that we don’t necessarily have traditional partnerships on.”
