The game marking the return of Professor Layton has been given a new trailer and a release window.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is set to release in 2025, according to developer Level-5.

The new video shows three minutes of gameplay, showing that the game appears to have a similar structure to the DS and 3DS games.

The game appears to still have a point-and-click system, with players still able to collect hint coins by searching the scenery.

The footage shows Layton and his apprentice Luke approaching the workshop of an inventor called Mr Eggmuffin, but struggling to find the entrance door.

Luke then brings out a memo, which leads to one of the game’s numerous puzzles. By solving the puzzle, the player can figure out which door to open.

The footage (which is Japanese but has English subtitles) can be seen below:

The Professor Layton series was extremely popular on the Nintendo DS and 3DS, with over 17 million units sold by June 2018.

The first four games – Curious Village, The Diabolical Box, The Unwound Future and The Last Specter – were released on the DS.

These were followed by two more games, The Miracle Mask and The Azran Legacy, on 3DS.

Level-5 also teamed up with Capcom in 2012 to release the crossover title Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which took elements from both series.

The most recent game in the series was Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy, which was released on 3DS in 2017.

However, this game focused on Layton’s daughter Katrielle, rather than the detective himself.
