Hellgate: Redemption – Everything We Know

1 week ago 36

The Hellgate series found its way into the hearts of thousands of fans from its first release more than a decade ago. So, when the reality of its hiatus sank in, dark fantasy game fans missed something to quench their thirst for the game that introduced the Looter Shooter genre with randomly generated gameplay levels. Flagship Studios originally developed the game in 2007 before the proprietor filed for bankruptcy the following year.

However, with the recollection of some of the creators and the birth of Lunacy Games, Hellgate is coming back to the video games scene with the codename Hellgate: Redemption. Lunacy Games, in partnership with HanbitSoft, already announced this work in progress. And now fans only have to wait a little longer to get back to Hellgate after a 17-year-long pause. Here is everything we know about Hellgate: Redemption for now.

What is Hellgate: Redemption?

Hellgate: Redemption is an upcoming AAA video game from Lunacy Games. The creator recently announced the game, codenamed Hellgate: Redemption, as their new project following Lunacy Games’ licensing agreement with the South Korean developers HanbitSoft. The expected installation will revive Hellgate: London franchise gameplay and fulfill Lunacy Games’ CEO's dream to return to the 2007 series.

In Bill Roper’s words, Hellgate: Redemption takes on the original franchise’s gameplay and lore elements. Thanks to the rapid advancements in the video game scene since the franchise's release, fans of Hellgate: London will be returning to the highly influential game but with new and exciting experiences.

Story

Continuing from Hellgate: London 17 years later, Hellgate: Redemption will have several similar elements to the original game. For instance, it will feature some characteristics that are additions from the upgrades of its predecessor. However, the developers have not disclosed the exact segments from the original game’s demon apocalypse world the game will occur. The developers will most likely still set the story in a futuristic time, just like Hellgate: London was set in the year 2038, years after a war struck.

The story focuses on the chaotic apocalypse that ruthless hellions have invaded. In the deep, dark world, hordes of demons are gathered in a circle. Here, the more advanced hellions are sitting at the center of the circle. They are on a mission to summon dark powers that grant physical forms and enable them to ascend into the human world.

Conquering the world has been their long-coveted idea, spanning hundreds of years. But amidst humankind's disbelief, the demons barely let their tongues out, escaping the world’s religion. But as soon as the first hellions succeeded, their numbers skyrocketed to the hundreds. They quickly advance to the middle of the world’s ancient forces. Each one carries out blood rituals that will connect the demon world and the human world; the Hellgate.

Gameplay

Hellgate London: 15 Years Later?? (Diablo Retrospective Part 3)

Hellgate: London’s game design is very similar to that of the Diablo series, perhaps because a few Diablo creators were involved in the game. This explains why some gamers love describing Diablo as Hellgate: London's spiritual predecessor, and the awakening Hellgate: Redemption will most probably carry on the roguelike game elements. Players will be up for a new role-playing game with first-person shooter action in a post-apocalyptic world.

The game is built on Unreal Engine 5, thus maintaining the original franchise's core gameplay and lore elements. All its action will unfold in dynamic and random environments. You play as the defenders of the world against the rising demons. Players enter combat zones while armed with modern weaponry and the arcane magic powers of the Greek fire flames. Here, they battle tireless hellions while using the underground demon-resistant safe zones.

In this highly replayable title, you will encounter a couple of random modifiers. They include; item drops in each playthrough, and randomly occurring game levels and monsters. And with Lunacy Games and Hanbinsoft committed to delivering a fresh experience of the Hellgate world that leverages industry developments, it’s likely Hellgate: Redemption will still include a coop mode. In the original series, multiplayer mode is more about player versus environment action and a lightly detailed PvP mode. Only elite gamers can indulge in more comprehensive PvP combat in coop mode.

Players can join the game as solo players. However, going solo means you forego some benefits, like in-game items and a different gaming experience. For instance, gameplay difficulty adjusts as more players take the defense. This in turn keeps players more engrossed in defeating the growing opposition.  Alternatively, they can choose cooperative mode, where they team up with others to face the growing opposition.

Development

Hellgate: Redemption was announced on March 27, 2024, by the development company’s CEO, Bill Roper. Revealing scanty details about the upcoming title, the CEO expressed excitement about the ongoing project that is set to launch sometime in the future. The game serves as a direct continuation of the original Hellgate: London series, driven by Roper’s passion for the Hellgate IP. The video game creator has always believed he is not finished with the series yet, prompting a revival after a 17-year hiatus.

With a development partnership between Lunacy Games and Hanbitsoft, the team is focused on gameplay and innovation, rallying every coin behind these two aspects. Players can expect lore elements and gameplay similar to Hellgate: London’s
