Accomplished gamers now integrate virtual reality headsets into their setups, as creators test their expertise to deliver virtual reality games that captivate gamers' time and energy.

In one of the recent developments, a new single-player survival VR horror game, Alien: Rogue Incursion is in the pipeline, promising an unprecedented experience through the hailed world of Alien for those who remember this long-standing Alien IP. Although the developers of Alien: Rogue Incursion have only disclosed a few hints about the game, the following is everything that we know about game.

What is Alien: Rogue Incursion?

Developed by Survios, a seasoned virtual reality game developer, Alien: Rogue Incursion is a single-player horror virtual reality game set in the Alien universe. Survios has been in the VR games realm for more than a decade, boasting games like Sprint Vector, Creed: Rise to Glory, Battlewake, and The Walking Dead: Onslaught. However, the creator is partnering with 20th Century Games to craft what it describes as the biggest and most ambitious virtual reality game of its decade in the industry.  

It will be the first virtual reality game in the world of Alien, inspired by 20th Century Games’ 1979 creation and its three sequel films of Alien, Aliens 3, and Alien Resurrection. Besides video games, the original film Alien has also inspired many comics, novels, and a TV series that is yet to premiere. 

Story

Although Alien: Rogue Incursion is set in the Alien universe and inspired by the long-standing franchise, it follows an entirely original story that incorporates all the fans favourite elements of the Alien franchise. However, it will still pit humans against the Alien characters, the nasty Xenomorphs, as they journey through the terrific world of Alien. And beyond the fearsome creatures, its a whole new experience full of adventure and heart-pounding kinetic combat. 

Gameplay

As the biggest game that Survios ever created in their 10 years of gaming history, Alien: Rogue Incursion is set to provide fans with a new and unique gaming experience, thanks to its fresh storyline. The Xenomorphs will give any player an adrenaline-pumping encounter, that fans can’t wait to catch amid the 2024 festivities when the game launches. According to the creators, the VR game is designed by the Aliens fandom for the game’s fans, with the veteran studios Survios bringing their expertise at the center of it all to piece together a futuristic virtual reality game.

In the original franchise from which Alien: Rogue Incursion draws inspiration, the gameplay is centered around Sigourney Weaver, the warrant officer who battles the extraterrestrial lifeforms that are still referred to as the Xenomorphs, and their creators who are known in the game as Engineers. With the Alien creatures still largely in the picture in Alien: Rogue Incursion, the gameplay will be all about deadly encounters with the Xenomorphs. Fans of the original game can already have a picture of what the game environment will feel like, although the creators envision a more technically advanced, immersive, yet scary VR game.

Development

Survios and 20th Century Games only announce the upcoming title recently but this doesn’t mean they are rustling up the creation quickly to have something to launch this holiday. In fact, Alien: Rogue Incursion is a unique single-player horror game in the series whose development begun from years ago. According to the seasoned VR games developer’s Chief Product Officer, the team has been working on the game for a long time. Although considered veterans in VR games, they continuously refine their skills and abilities throughout the process to develop the most advanced and immersive VR gaming title, establishing the industry standard.

The team captures all the remarkable moments in the Alien franchise since it’s first release in 1979, and embeds some of the most resourceful Alien creatures. This perhaps explains why Survios term Alien: Rogue Incursion the most ambitious virtual reality game created in Unreal Engine 5. Notably, the developers are crafting a new story within the Alien universe and expanding to new platforms beyond the typical VR headsets.

Trailer

20th Century Games and Survios already released an announcement trailer that is available on YouTube. The 57 seconds trailer begins with a warning of the game’s pending rating, but proposes 17+, which will most likely be the upcoming VR installation’s rating. While the trailer does not reveal any gameplay action, it manages to capture the game’s atmosphere with the dark sky background with stars, and a scary tune that perfectly resonates with the game’s horrific nature. 

Release Date & Platforms

Based on the creators’ sentiments, fans will get their hands on the game in the upcoming holiday season, which places Alien: Rogue Incursion release just a couple of months away. However, unlike most VR games we have seen before, the much anticipated release will not be available on Quest 2 or Quest Pro headsets. Alien: Rogue Incursion is now the first major title to list its support for Quest 3, confirming the rumors that the current headsets are due for an update. 

Quest 2 launched in 2020, before Quest Pro came to introduce the real mixed reality gaming set in 2022. Rumours suggested that Meta was working on a ‘Quest 3 Lite', a speculation that Alien: Rogue Incursion's announcement has now confirmed. From the announcement trailer, the game will be available for PlayStation VR 2, Meta Quest 3, and Steam.
