How To Find The Cathedral Of Manus Metyr, Count Ymir And Swordhand Of Night Jolán

Before we can kick off Count Ymir and Swordhand of Night Jolán’s questlines, we need to get to them first. They’re at the Cathedral Of Manus Metyr. So now we have to get to the Cathedral, a place on your map you will not have visited unless you discover the path there.

It’s a long trek, but would it be a FromSoftware game if it didn’t have a long, out-of-the-way path towards a whole area of the map and a really essential boss for the lore-heads?

Beginning from the Moorth Ruins site of grace, you’ll want to travel south east until you see a giant hole in the ground with houses and ledges leading downwards.

This is the first big hurdle. Once you get down as low as you can without making a huge jump, there will be a ruined building that you can land on to break a fall that would otherwise kill you.

Unless you land on some part of this ruin, you will die from the fall. So it’s important to aim well. However like plenty of challenges in a FromSoftware game, there’s a trick to it.

It helps if you’re playing online, because you’ll potentially be able to see a message the author of this guide left that clues players in. “Try rolling.” There’s a spot near the ledge next to a corpse where if you roll forward off the ledge, you’ll hit the ruin squarely every time. Also remember that while this fall (done properly) won’t kill you, it will take out a chunk of your health bar so just don’t be anywhere close to dying before attempting this.

Once there it’s a much simpler path down towards a tunnel that leads to a ladder. Mind the mage enemies you’ll need to kill on your way, and a chest to loot once you’ve mopped the enemies up.

When you reach the bottom there will be a tunnel to follow towards a long rope-ladder. Climb, and climb, and climb until you’ve reached the top and the Bonny Village site of grace.

Now that you’ve reached Bonny Village, you’re on a previously unavailable section of the map, and able to follow the bridges connecting islands that sets you on the path towards the Cathedral of Manus Metyr.

From the Bonny Village site of grace, head east across the bridges to the Bridge Leading to the Village site of grace and from there follow the main path north to the Church District Highroad site of grace.

Then turn south and the Cathedral will be right in front of you. Count Ymir and Jolán await you inside.

Count Ymir And Swordhand of Night Jolán’s Questline

You don’t need to totally complete Count Ymir and Swordhand of Night Jolán’s quest lines to get to the boss fight for Metyr, Mother Of Fingers but you will need to complete the vast majority of it to even get to the fight. Once you’ve beaten Metyr though completing the quest is an easy matter of returning to the Cathedral for your final encounters with them.

For getting to that point, and most importantly for our purposes the Metyr, Mother Of Fingers boss fight, you’ll want to follow these steps:

  • Make your way to the Cathedral Manus Metyr as outlined above.
  • Speak to Count Ymir and exhaust his dialogue until you receive the Ruins Map and Hole-Laden Necklace. It’s optional but worth mentioning that you can speak to him further for lore dumps by purchasing spells in his shop, which grant a number of new Finger spells for intelligence builds.
  • Before leaving speak to Jolán who is leaning against a pillar on the right-hand side of the main hall, the one right near the entrance of the room. Exhaust her dialogue and head to the Finger Ruins of Rhia.
  • To get to the Finger Ruins of Rhia, you’ll need to have reached the Cerulean Coast region first, and you can check out our guide on how to get there. Once there, from the Cerulean Coast Cross site of grace:
    • Head north to where you found the map fragment for the Southern Shore, and make a right just before passing the stele.
    • Follow the path down to a beach, where you’ll encounter Finger spiders big and small. Make sure to ride up the large stone structures you’ll pass along the way to the far shore, as you can find Great Great Grave Glovewort’s or other spirit upgrade materials.
    • Ride along the shore until you reach the other side and another patch of blue flowered fields, and use the stone structure to climb up to a path that’ll appear on your right leading directly into the Finger Ruins of Rhia.
  • Once you’ve reached the Finger Ruins you’ll have some new enemies to deal with but there’s no boss or major enemy to fight here, so you’re better off just running to the middle where seven giant fingers converge in a circle around a horn, which you need to sound before heading back to the Cathedral.

  • Back at the Cathedral, speak to Count Ymir again, exhaust his dialogue and you’ll be rewarded with a second Ruins Map and Beloved Stardust, a new talisman which shortens casting time “by the utmost” for spells and incantations, but at the cost of increased damage taken.
  • Before heading out again speak to Jolán and exhaust her dialogue once more.
  • Travel to the Finger Ruins of Dheo to sound the second bell. Reaching these Finger Ruins requires the O Mother Gesture which can be found in Bonny Village by traveling north from the Bonny Village site of grace and finding a statue with the gesture at its feet.
  • To access the Finger Ruins of Dheo, once you’ve acquired the O Mother Gesture:
    • Head to the Shadow Keep, Back Gate site of grace, just ahead of the Commander Gaius boss fight.
    • Turn right into the room with a headless statue of Marika and perform the O Mother gesture in front of it to reveal a path to the Hinterlands and a site of grace.
    • Defeat the two Tree Sentinels along the main path (or run past them) heading east and cross the bridge to the Hinterland Bridge site of grace.
    • Keep going east to find the Fingerstone Hill site of grace, then turn south to find the Finger Ruins of Dheo
  • Just like the Finger Ruins of Rhia, you’ll find the bell surrounded by giant fingers all pointing towards it and encircling it. Sound the second bell and head back to the Cathedral.
  • Speak to Count Ymir until you’re presented with a third Ruins Map and then go exhaust Jolán’s dialogue. Then go to the Cathedral’s site of grace to reload the area. (A side note, it’s worth making sure you’ve exhausted Ymir’s dialogue and bought spells from him along the way, since his dialogue includes huge lore dumps if you’re interested).
  • Ymir should have disappeared from his throne after reloading. Head towards it and interact with it to reveal a hidden passage with a ladder to an area far below the cathedral, the Finger Ruins of Miyr.
  • As you approach the third and final bell you’ll be invaded by Swordhand of Night Anna, defeat her and head to the bell.
  • Sound the bell to be teleported to the Metyr, Mother Of Fingers boss fight.

How To Beat Metyr, Mother Of Fingers

Metyr, Mother Of Fingers is arguably one of the most important fights for players deep into the lore of the game, but as far as how it ranks just in terms of a boss fight, it’s nothing too out of the ordinary.

At times it feels very much like fighting any very large enemy in a FromSoftware game, a fight where you’re dodging big ground slams and running away from some attacks that deal damage across a large area but never staying far away for too long.

Metyr has a strong long-ranged laser she’ll fire out towards you if you try to stay back, so it’s best to stay as close as you can. If you’ve already been crowned Elden Lord in the base game, then this fight will feel very close to fighting the Elden Beast, though perhaps without as much running around.

Just like Elden Beast, Metyr has a front-facing weak point. Hitting the mound of fingers and flesh that occupies her chest (?) area will deal extra damage, so you’ll want to stick as close to that as you can for the fight.

She’s weak to bleed like a lot pretty much everything else in Elden Ring but she’s also especially weak to magic, so intelligence builds shouldn’t have any issue taking her down.

That doesn’t mean faith builds should despair – she’s also quite weak to Frenzied Flame incantations, something that anyone who’d been following the story and lore of the game should be able to guess at.

Sticking to her front and taking advantages of her weaknesses should net you victory of Metyr, Mother of Fingers in no time. Once you’ve finished the boss fight, make sure to head back to mop up the final moments of Count Ymir and Swordhand of Night Jolán’s questlines.
