Ubisoft’s upcoming free-to-play shooter XDefiant has been delayed until October due to console certification issues, confirms producer.

Despite an original summer release window, the first-person arena shooter has now been delayed until autumn. With the publisher blaming the delay on certification issues, here’s everything we know so far.

What Is XDefiant?

XDefiant is a 6v6 shooter originally titled Tom Clancy’s XDefiant back in 2021 before the prefix was dropped. Inspired by games such as Splinter Cell, The Division and Ghost Recon, players take part in online matches.

You can pick between five unique factions including Libertad, Phantoms, Echelon, Cleaners and DeadSec. Each offers a unique skill set such as the Libertad being expert medics.

Each match will take place on unique maps inspired by popular Ubisoft worlds alongside original maps.

Finally, players can choose between a series of game modes including arena and progression modes.

October Delay

Despite the game having multiple closed insider tests and open sessions throughout its development and being somewhat ready for launch, that has now changed due to outsider issues.

Writing in a post on the official Ubisoft website, XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin has said the delay is due to a complication between Microsoft and Sony’s certification processes for the Xbox and PlayStation.

“At the end of July, we started this process, and we got our first results back by mid-August which was a Not Pass,” Rubin explained. “We realised then that we had more work related to compliance than we had anticipated.

If it HAD passed, then we would have been able to ship at the end of Aug. But it didn’t and so we have spent the last 3-4 weeks fixing those issues and getting ready to do another submission.”

Despite this, Rubin went on to explain that if the game “passes cleanly” after a resubmission, the game could have a “mid-to-end of September release.”

“I know it’s been quite a journey to get to this point and I want to thank every single person that has joined us along the way,” Rubin concluded. “We really can’t wait to go live and share our passion and love for XDefiant with everyone. Hope to see you all soon in game!”
