When is the Sea of Thieves Monkey Island Expansion Coming?

The new Sea of Thieves X Monkey Island expansion is a collaborative effort between Rare Studios and Lucasfilm Games to bring the iconic characters from the popular Monkey Island franchise into the world of Sea of Thieves. The developers have certainly tried to maintain authenticity by bringing in the actual voice actors from the franchise. This expansion will be available as a three-part Tall Tale series. Players can access this expansion without having to pay for the DLC and the content will be accessible starting 20th July. Do note that the developers intend to release the content in three parts so it will be a long time until we get to see everything that is planned for fans.

The Legend of the Monkey Island X Sea of Thieves

According to the Devs, this expansion is a creative effort to bring in iconic characters such as Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine, Captain LeChuck, and Murray the Demonic Talking Skull to the Sea of Thieves universe. Players will be able to access both Mêlée and Monkey Island to attempt quests and solve puzzles. There is a new point-and-click mechanic added to the game which is optimized to seamlessly work in Sea of Thieves’s 1st person perspective. Upon starting this expansion, players will be taken to the Sea of the Damned to avoid any interruptions from other players.

The Legend of the Monkey Island expansion releases in three parts with the first one set to launch on the 20th July across platforms like PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The event will take place over a span of three months.

Upon taking a look at the first announcement trailer, you will notice that along with bringing the characters from the Monkey Island franchise, Sea of Thieves also aims to capture and portray the gameplay elements present in Monkey Island games. Even the humor and the pacing of the game is set to match that of Monkey Island which makes for a truly immersive experience for Sea of Thieves and Monkey Island fans alike.

After the Xbox Games Showcase event back in June, Sea of Thieves Creative Director Mike Chapman was asked about the collaboration. He had this to say “Probably one of the most exciting aspects of this is the opportunity to tell an original story in a world that we are such fans of. There have been so many times during the development on Sea of Thieves where we’ve been inspired by the Monkey Island humor, the tone, and the sense of whimsy in Sea of Thieves.”
