If the title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants, is ringing a bell, you’ve probably already played it before… as an arcade game. Originally titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the game made its way out of the sewers and into our hearts as a beat 'em-up. It was released in 2017 by developer Thrills and garnered quite positive reviews from fans worldwide. Now, you’ll be happy to know the arcade game is finally coming to consoles and PCs. But what do we know so far about the upcoming game? Read through to the end of our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants — Everything We Know article to find out.

What is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants?

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo fighting enemies

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants is an upcoming arcade game, originally released in 2017 by Raw Thrills. The game is based on the 2012 Nickelodeon TV series of the same name. It includes the same voice actors as the show, including Seth Green, Sean Astin, Greg Cipes, and Rob Paulsen, all reprising their respective roles for the upcoming port release.

Story

 Wrath of the Mutants

As always, the four anthropomorphic ninja turtles, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo, return to fight crime in New York City. After training in the sewers, they’re finally ready to take on the dangers above ground. You’ll work toward taking down Shredder and his maniacal plan.

Along the way, you’ll be fighting the Foot Clan across six stages, including Coney Island, Dimension X, and more. You’ll also face 13 formidable bosses leading up to the final battle against your arch-nemesis, Shredder. Check out the official story description below via GameMill Entertainment.

Re-experience the 2017 arcade classic on consoles and PCs with three additional stages and six additional boss battles! Take control of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, or Raphael in this classic beat ’em up inspired by the cult favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. Battle your way across Coney Island, Dimension X and more on a mission to defeat the Foot Clan and your arch-nemesis Shredder!

Gameplay

 Wrath of the Mutants

Gear up for fun with friends, cracking shells and all, in four-player local co-op mode. While most of the gameplay in the original appears to be the same, the trailer does reveal that new stages and boss fights will feature in the new game. These will likely be in addition to the original’s gameplay, including returning characters.

You’ll enjoy three new stages and six additional boss battles. And, of course, slice and dice using Leo, Mikey, Donnie, and Raph as your playable characters. Overall, though, the game remains a port that aims for players to re-experience the classic 2017 arcade on consoles and PCs. So, you’ll be fighting hordes of enemies in co-op, choosing your favorite turtle to lead the charge.

While all ninja turtles are trained in ninjutsu, they each have unique abilities and skills. Additionally, each turtle has a special super attack that drastically raises the stakes in your favor when used. They’re always fighting as a team, though. So, you can always call for mutant backup support by picking up a specific token. Check out the official gameplay description below via GameMill Entertainment.

  • Double the Mayhem – Fight your way through six stages and 13 boss battles, including three all-new stages and six new boss battles not present in the original arcade release.
  • Play as the Four Turtles – Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mikey, voiced by the talents of the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series (Seth Green, Sean Astin, Rob Paulsen, Greg Cipes), are ready to fight against the evil Foot Clan!
  • Unleash Turtle Power – Use special super attacks unique to each turtle to devastate waves of enemies and find tokens to summon mutant backup to help clear your foes.
  • Local Cooperative Play – Play with your friends in four-player local couch cooperative play.

Development

Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo running

Developers Raw Thrills and Cradle Games are currently working on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants. However, publisher GameMill Entertainment will take wings on the marketing side. They haven’t published any TMNT games before. But they do have experience with Nickelodeon games, including publishing Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 and Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway, among others. On the other hand, the 2017 TMNT arcade game was originally developed by Raw Thrills. So, it’s nice that they return to ensure the port remains authentic to the original.

That said, the move to port a classic TMNT beat ‘em up to consoles and PCs seems to have sprung out of nowhere. I mean, it’s certainly splendid to revive arcade-style gaming for a contemporary audience. Hopefully, the port runs smoothly while still retaining the charm of a retro experience. It’d be a shame if the port didn’t deliver a more enriching experience with high replayability. If it doesn’t deliver, perhaps it’s time to switch from beat ‘em up to the fighting genre.

Feel free to check out the first announcement trailer which showcases the visuals and gameplay of what to expect. It’s somewhat similar to the original arcade game. So, gamers who have already played the original should have a good idea of what to expect. Or rather, if you’ve played any TMNT game before, often side scrolling beat ‘em ups, you should be all set for a soft landing upon release.
