Teamfight Tactics: Magic n’ Mayhem Set 12 shakes things up with Charms

During the Teamfight Tactics Tactician’s Crown Finals on July 14, Riot Games revealed details of the upcoming TFT Set 12 titled Magic n’ Mayhem. As per usual, the new Set introduces new mechanics while changing up the Traits, Augments, and playable champions in the tactical auto battler over the next few months. Magic n’ Mayhem will be available for testing on the PBE starting July 16 with the start of the Set scheduled for July 31, 2024.

A CHARMing Set full of whimsical moments

Alongside the shakeup of the champion pool for this set, three all-new characters never before seen in TFT are joining the battle. First up is Norra, a Yordle from Riot Games’ card game Legends of Runeterra. Interestingly, Norra comes paired with Yuumi, allowing players to attach the magical cat to champions of their choice to support them, just like in League of Legends. Also joining TFT in Set 12 are Briar and Smolder, newer released champions in League of Legends.

Other key features in Set 12 include 27 Traits, 60 Champions, and over 200 Augments including all-new High-Stake Augments. These Augments have replaced High-Stake Traits that previously existed in TFT, allowing players to utilize the popular high-risk and high-reward gameplay with any build they choose, which is certainly good news for those that like to play those sort of builds.

Without a doubt the biggest addition to Magic n’ Mayhem, however, is the new Charms feature. There are over 100 Charms that appear for players to buy each round, which are essentially single-use purchasable spells. Each Charm changes up the gameplay in some way for that round, offering Combat boons, economy buffs, amplifying traits, and much more.

I had the opportunity to play a few games of Magic n’ Mayhem and the feature really changes up the meta for TFT. I found myself early game opting for Charms that assisted by economy or helped mold the Traits and build I was going for, before transitioning towards combat-specific Charms later in the game to try and give me an extra little edge over my opponents. The biggest factor here is that you can only choose one Charm per round, and they cost Gold, so often times I’d find Charm options that were “okay” and have to decide if it was worth risking it to try and get a better one or just take that Charm and hope for the best.

Riot also announced that the e-sports world of TFT will be headed to Macao later this year for the TFT Macao Open, a global LAN event taking place from December 13-15, 2024. In total, there will be 512 spots available via the open-bracket tournament allowing players from all over the world to compete for their share of the $300,000 prize pool.

Teamfight Tactics: Magic n’ Mayhem Set 12 goes live on PC and mobile on July 31, 2024. As per usual, the new update will be free for all players.
