Tales of Three Kingdoms: The Mortal World — Everything We Know

5 months ago 135

It’s been thousands of years since its transition into the Jin Dynasty, and yet, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms still remains one of the most influential, and perhaps most tailorable periods in history — especially when it comes to producing love letters in a video game format. Well, as it turns out, there’s another verse from said love letters on the horizon—a 2.5D turn-based RPG called Tales of Three Kingdoms: The Mortal World. According to its developer, Softstar Entertainment, the game will plunge its players into the thick of the Han Dynasty, and will ultimately create a web of “challenges and situations” to overcome.

So, what else do you really need to know about the upcoming journey into the depths of the Three Kingdoms period? Well, if you happened to miss out on its initial announcement, then be sure to read on. Here’s everything you need to know about Tales of Three Kingdoms: The Mortal World.

What Is Tales of Three Kingdoms: The Mortal World?

Tales of Three Kingdoms: The Mortal World is a 2.5D turn-based RPG—a game in which players are invited to immerse in a story-driven adventure set during the Han Dynasty (otherwise known as the Three Kingdoms) period. In the game, players must take on the role of Dou Fu, a protagonist “who has always tried to live a low-key life in this chaotic period.” According to the blurb, the narrative will revolve around Dou Fu, as well as the events that occur in the aftermath of their meeting with the Princess. But, as for what these events will bring to the table of remains something of a mystery. Either way, the game boasts a wide selection of Generals to collect, as well as a rather nifty, traditional turn-based combat blueprint.

Story

At the time of writing, there isn’t a whole lot of information on the game’s overarching narrative, other than the fact that it’ll have something to do with one character’s connection with the Princess of the Han Dynasty. However, as it’s still early days, there’s still a good chance that the developer will add a few additional coats of paint to the portrait over the next several months. Until that time comes, however, we’re pretty much left to twiddle thumbs and speculate.

According to Softstar Entertainment, “the game story is set in the Three Kingdoms period. The game’s protagonist is Dou Fu, who has always tried to live a low-key life in this chaotic period. But one day, Dou Fu begins to get involved in different events after meeting the “Princess” from the Han Dynasty. During the game, players will face various challenges and situations. The choices players make will lead them to different endings…”

Gameplay

From the sounds of the blurb, a huge chunk of the gameplay will revolve around exploring a semi-open world setting, as well as engaging in traditional turn-based combat. There’ll also be a gacha-like system—a feature that will grant players the opportunity to collect and recruit Generals from the Three Kingdoms, and essentially pool their abilities together to form “Combos”, which will serve as a way to generate even more prowess and influence across the battlefield and beyond.

“The game’s main combat feature is Combo,” the description explains. “Players are able to link characters’ different types of skills together in a single move to defeat enemies. In addition, collecting Generals is also an important mechanic of the game. Players can recruit various heroes from Three Kingdoms to form the best team.” With that, we can certainly expect to see our fair share of instantly recognizable Generals, all of whom will hail from the kingdoms of Wei, Wu, and Shu.

Aside from the turn-based combat and traditional RPG tropes, Tales of Three Kingdoms: The Mortal World will also include a number of different pathways and endings, too. Knowing that, we can also expect plenty of choice-based dialogue and crucial conversations that’ll essentially lay the foundations for the eventual climax — whatever that might be.

Development

If you’ve yet to brush up on the studio’s history and portfolio, then just know this: Softstar Entertainment is responsible for the likes of Sword and Fairy, Xuan-Yuan Sword, and The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation—three acclaimed action-adventure RPGs that have gone on to span several sequels and spin-offs. Suffice to say, Tales of Three Kingdoms: The Mortal World is in safe hands, given the studio’s expertise in the genre.

As it stands, we can’t say for certain whether or not the latest venture will arrive before 2025. Going by the press release, however, it seems the devs are targeting a 2024 launch — so we had best keep our eyes peeled as we nudge closer towards year’s end for any updates on the matter.

Trailer

Unfortunately, there isn’t any footage to share just yet. Having said that, with the developer having only just announced it, it’s likely that we’ll be seeing some more updates and, with any luck, a gameplay trailer, over the next several months or so.
