SumaiL Says He Respects TORONTOTOKYO’s Trashtalk During TI10

Popular Dota 2 personalities Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan, Kurtis "Aui_2000" Ling, and Anton "dyrachyo" Shkredov discussed trashtalking at the Bali Major 2023.

According to SumaiL and Aui_2000, trashtalking is respectable in the moment, but it is a lame move once a player has already won.

While Aui_2000 had contrasting opinions, SumaiL stated that he respected Team Spirit's Alexander "TORONTOTOKYO" Khertek's all-chat to OG during TI10 despite the fact that he was about to be eliminated.

In Dota 2 and in esports generally, trashtalking has been a controversial topic over the years, with some enjoying its intensity while others raising questions about the spirit of the game. At the Bali Major 2023, popular Dota 2 personalities Sumail "SumaiL" Hassan, Kurtis "Aui_2000" Ling, and Anton "dyrachyo" Shkredov discussed trashtalking. According to SumaiL and Aui_2000, trashtalking is acceptable in the moment, but it becomes lame once a player has already won. In particular, SumaiL shared his thoughts on an incident at The International (10), in which Team Spirit's Alexander "TORONTOTOKYO" Khertek taunted his team OG in the all-chat.

The three players said trash talking had declined in the past few months with the exception of Quinn "Quinn" Callahan who still did it in a smart way, and the majority of players don't take it seriously.

SumaiL then spoke about how good his former captain at Evil Geniuses Peter "ppd" Dager was at trash talking. “PPD was the best ever to trashtalk I think. He really did, actually. I miss it. But PPD would look into your eyes. Walk up to you and tell you f**k you. And I think that’s a proper way to do it anyway,” he said.

In response, Aui_2000 commented that trashtalk after winning was the worst, to which SumaiL agreed and then talked about the TORONTOTOKYO incident from TI10 when he had typed "ez game" in the all-chat after taking a decisive teamfight win against OG.

“You have to say before or during it. When TORONTOTOKYO did it during the game against us at TI, I thought that wasn’t cool. I mean, of course, I was getting eliminated from TI so I hated it but at the same time I respected it because it’s in the game. I still respected it. I think that was at least proper. It’s on the Main Stage. It’s not some pub battle going on.”

TORONTOTOKYO's all-chat at TI10, however, did not sit particularly well with Aui_2000, who said he would have respected it if he had done it five minutes earlier when the game was relatively even. In 2021, Aui_2000 questioned this particular incident, stating that players should understand the struggle of losing TI’s elimination game before trashtalking.

Ai_2000 and SumaiL also talked about Invictus Gaming's midlaner Zhou "Emo" Yi's '?' in the all-chat during Singapore Major 2021, saying that this trashtalk was impressive considering the team was 2-0 down at the stage and went on to reverse sweep Evil Geniuses to win the Major after it.

Aui_2000 currently coaches Tundra Esports, while SumaiL plays for Team Aster. Tundra Esports has already qualified for TI12, whilst SumaiL will have to compete in regional qualifiers to get into TI12. Meanwhile, dyrachyo and his Gaimin Gladiators have been the greatest team of the year, having already earned TI12's direct invite a few weeks ago.
