Star Wars Outlaws Has Gone Gold Ahead Of August Release

Star Wars: Outlaws has gone gold, publisher and developer Ubisoft announced on Wednesday. A short teaser for the new Star Wars game set to arrive on August 30, 2024 was showcased along with the announcement on Twitter.

Headed up by The Division developer Ubisoft Massive, Outlaws has been touted as the “first-ever open world Star Wars game,” where players dig into the underbelly of the Star Wars universe and experience the life of a scoundrel through Kay Vess and her alien companion Nix.

“Star Wars Outlaws has gone gold!” said Ubisoft in its post on Twitter. “Our team can’t wait for you to start exploring the Outer Rim and living the life of a scoundrel – August 30 can’t come soon enough!”

While it’s arguable how definitively Ubisoft can make its claim about this being the “first-ever open world Star Wars game,” Outlaws definitely seems to be like a new kind of experience compared to previous Star Wars games.

That said, if this is nothing more than Far Cry with a Star Wars coat of paint, just the fact that it’s open world likely won’t save it in the eyes of players.

In our hands-off preview we praised the look and details that seem to have gone into the environmental design but felt cautious about the gameplay. Nothing about it popped out as something that looked like a unique gameplay mechanic or device.

Still, that was just a hands-off look at a small chunk of gameplay. So we’ll reserve full judgement until we’ve played it ourselves.

In the meantime, the news that it’s “gone gold” at least cements another milestone leading towards launch.

As a side note, it’s interesting how “gone gold” seemingly doesn’t mean what it used to anymore. Perhaps it still means a version of the game is complete enough to be printed on a disc and played, but how final is it when players won’t be able to play that printed disc version without a day one patch?
