Soda Dungeon developer AN Productions is officially cutting the ribbon to a full-fledged turn-based RPG called Signy & Mino: Against All Gods—a game that will reportedly mix Paper Mario with Street Fighter. Curious to learn more about this newly fashioned IP, I recently caught up with Shawn Tanner, who kindly gave me a deeper insight into the project.

It’s great to hear from you! Before we slip into the latest chapter in AN Productions’ ever-evolving career, please could you introduce yourself to our readers? Who are you, and what brought you to the world of game development?

Shawn: Hi! My name is Shawn, and I’ve been a full-time indie developer for almost 20 years now. I started in the world of web games under the alias Afro-Ninja, making flash content for Newgrounds, Armor Games, Addicting Games, and more. Eventually I transitioned into mobile with the Soda Dungeon series, and now I’m trying my hand at my first console game.

Signy & Mino: Against All Gods is officially set to launch on consoles and PC in 2025. Tell us, with the demo now out in the open, are we closing in on that all-important gold status? What’s next, if you don’t mind me asking?

Shawn: I wish I could say gold is right around the corner, but we encountered some development and legal snags this year. Most of the game’s systems are complete, it’s just a matter of filling in all the content that goes with it.

We’re curious to hear more about the setting and story behind Signy & Mino: Against All Gods. Please could you provide us with some background details on it? Who’s who, and what are our protagonists striving to achieve?

Shawn: The story revolves around a girl named Signy and her dog Mino, as they become entangled in an unexpected conflict. A power-hungry scientist at the nearby Mountain Research Center has found a way to resurrect a mountain god. Another god shows up to stop him and thanks to a strange connection between gods and humans, Signy becomes the ideal person to help.

🚨IMPORTANT NEWS🚨 We are now officially Signy and Mino: Against All Gods. Nice to meet you!

Let’s talk about the gameplay style and the game’s signature mechanics. How would you best describe it, and what inspired the turn-based approach?

Shawn: I’m just a longtime fan of turn-based gameplay where you can consider your options before acting. I generally describe the game as Paper Mario crossed with Street Fighter. It’s still an RPG at its core but I wanted to let players piece together intricate combos that would normally be reserved for fighting game pros.

With the demo in place, it seems only right that we should ask for a few pro tips and tricks on how to tackle the RPG and its bustling world. Do you have any words of advice for those who are looking to embark on their own quests?

Shawn: We built the demo to be very approachable and forgiving for first-time players. As long as you follow the tutorial prompts and pay attention to your timing you shouldn’t have any trouble!

Apologies for jumping the gun here, but are you able to shed light on any other projects that you might be looking to explore in the near future?

Shawn: Right now I’m all-in on Signy and Mino. I have some ideas in my back pocket for another sequel to Soda Dungeon but I know better than to juggle two game projects at the same time.

So, where might we be able to source more information on Signy & Mino: Against All Gods? Are we able to share any social channels, streams, or upcoming events with our readers?

Shawn: Directing people to our Steam page is always the first priority.

We’re also trying to build up our Discord community, and you can also find us on Twitter/X.

Is there anything you would like to add before we go ahead and wrap things up?

Shawn: I did my best to craft a game full of heart, I hope it resonates with players! Thank you for the interview.

We appreciate you taking the time to speak with us about the world of Signy & Mino: Against All Gods. We look forward to seeing more of it over the coming months!
