Shame Legacy: Everything We Know

1 year ago 98

Fairyship Games and Revenant Games have come together to formulate an all-new occult survival-horror game for consoles and PC—and it’s heading our way on May 30, 2023. But what is this so-called Shame Legacy, and how will it seperate itself from the rest of the cat-and-mouse-like horror games on the market? Well, herein lies a question that yearns to be answered. Because as it stands, one can only describe it as being a love letter to Red Barrels’ Outlast II.

Fortunately for us, we won’t have to wait all that long to see the cultist village in its prime. Until then, though, we’re pretty much left to twiddle our thumbs and interpret the key facts both Fairyship and Revenant have already left out to dry. And so, if you’re interested in learning more about it, then be sure to read on. Shame Legacy: what is it, and why should it be stapled to your radar this year?

What Is Shame Legacy?

Shame Legacy is an upcoming occult survival-horror game by Fairyship Games and Revenant Games. In this joint venture, players will be invited to take part in a horrifying cat-and-mouse tale—a traditional event that casts you, the unfortunate soul who’s inherited a family curse, as the mouse in a labyrinth full of sadistic and worryingly eagle-eyed villagers. As such, you will need to keep your wits about you as you work to not only unravel the mysteries that pertain to the hunt, but to survive the terrors that await you.

In the words of Fairyship and Revenant Games: “Shame Legacy is a first-person survival horror, set in a 19th century forsaken cultist village. You attempt to survive using stealth and escape mechanics. By solving puzzles, you figure out your connection to it all. Meanwhile, an eerie danger looms over…”

Story

It goes like this: you’ve inherited your family’s burden—a one-sided event that mysteriously puts an entire village hot on your heels and in search of blood. Unfortunately for you, you don’t know what your connection with the event is, nor its origins. To find this out, you will need to tiptoe your way through the tainted world in search of answers and, above all, a means to escape its evil clutches. Or at least, that’s what we’ve been able to gather from its rather vague description over on Steam, anyway.

“Waking up confused in a past equivalent of an anger management convention, you quickly realize that, one, a hunt is taking place, and two, you’re the prey they’re after,” the blurb reads. “The legacy of your family seems to have caught up to you, but maybe not in the way you’d expect. Apparently an inheritance doesn’t always mean fancy yachts.”

Gameplay

The devs behind Shame Legacy describe the gameplay as being lenient towards survival-horror with “stealth and escape” mechanics to boot. To this end, players can expect to spend a great deal of time tiptoeing through various biomes, solving puzzles, and outsmarting the bloodthirsty enemies who hunt you throughout your time in the village.

“Your mental ability will come in handy when solving puzzles,” the blurb elaborates. “So will your cane, which also serves as your defense weapon to fend off attacking villagers. Very eco-friendly approach to maximizing assets.”

Of course, there’s still plenty we don’t actually know about the gameplay elements, mainly the action sections that will play a role in the overall structure. Clearly, though, the aforementioned cane that you wield will help initiate melee-based combat encounters—meaning it won’t all be stealth and shadow dwelling. Just to hazard a guess, anyway.

Development

Announced earlier this week, Fairyship Games and Revenant Games brought Shame Legacy to light in the most traditional way conceivable: a minute-long trailer showcasing just a sliver of core details and the general outline of the game’s story. And while it didn’t come loaded with any in-depth monologues or out-of-the-box features, it did go on to state that it’d be coming to consoles and PC on May 30, 2023. So that’s something.

Shame Legacy - Official Announcement Trailer

The good news is, Fairyship Games did bring a sneak preview trailer of Shame Legacy to compliment the details earlier this week. Although rather short and to-the-point, it did showcase a few of its gameplay elements, mainly the chase sequences and antagonists that’ll make up a great portion of the experience. Release Date, Platforms & Editions

Shame Legacy will be heading to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store on May 30, 2023. Does this mean it’s in with a chance of getting a spot on the Game Pass or PlayStation Plus roster? In short, yes—but not as a launch day exclusive, it seems. However, if it does decide to snag a spot on either of the two, then chances are it won’t make its debut until at least a few months or so after its initial launch.

As if currently stands, there are no special or deluxe editions outside of the standard version. If anything of the sort does come about, then Fairyship Games or Revenant Games are bound to make a formal announcement over on its socials here. Until then, you can add it to your Wishlist over on Steam here.
