In 2022, Riot Games made it clear that it wants to operate with a total of seven maps in its first person hero shooter Valorant since best-of-5s (BO5) in tournaments could have two map bans without any repeat picks. After working with the in-house esports team, surveying players and talking to professional organizations, Riot decided to maintain a 7-map pool.

Valorant maps team design lead Joe “Pearl Hogbash” Lansford said, "The team thinks seven is a nice sweet spot that offers both variety and mastery. You don’t have to spend all your time learning new angles, lineups, and strategies."

With Sunset being the latest addition to the growing map pool in Valorant, Riot Games has rotated out a few old ones to make way for this Los Angeles-based map.

Here's all you need to know about the current map rotation in Valorant competitive mode for September 2023.

Riot Games Rotates Out Fracture and Pearl

The competitive and unrated queues have been working with seven maps and the last time around, Riot pulled Breeze and Bind from the rotation. But Bind made a comeback to the game with Episode 6 Act III and Icebox went out. Players should note that there is a total of ten maps in the game and they are as follows:

  • Ascent

  • Bind

  • Fracture

  • Haven

  • Lotus

  • Pearl

  • Split

  • Breeze

  • Icebox

  • Sunset

In Episode 7, it is Breeze's turn to return to the game and as a result, Riot Games is rotating out Fracture and Pearl. On 18th August, the publisher said, "Your stay in paradise has been upgraded. At the start of Episode 7 Act 2, Breeze will return to the map rotation with a few changes—Fracture and Pearl will rotate out."

Given that Pearl and Fracture have been pulled out, the maps that are currently in rotation in Valorant are as follows:

  • Ascent

  • Bind

  • Breeze

  • Haven

  • Lotus

  • Split

  • Sunset

Riot Games said, "Sunset will now be in the map rotation for Competitive mode. Competitive map rotation includes: Sunset, Breeze, Ascent, Haven, Bind, Split, and Lotus."

Sunset is Valorant's 10th Map

Sunset is Valorant's tenth map and is one of the more traditional ones featuring two sites and three lanes.

An additional feature on this map is a mechanical door between B Market and Mid Courtyard and players can use a switch on the Market side of the door to access it. This door is impenetrable while closed but has 500 HP, allowing players to damage and eventually destroy it and once destroyed, it remains permanently open for the reminder of the round.
