That there will be a Resident Evil 9 is not something that’s ever been in doubt, and after consistent leaks speaking about the same, Capcom has officially confirmed that the game is indeed in the works.

During the recent Capcom Next summer showcase, Koshi Nakanishi, who directed Resident Evil 7, revealed that the next mainline Resident Evil game is in development, and that he is returning to direct it. According to Nakanishi – who also directed Resident Evil Revelations and was also involved in the development of Resident Evil 5 – though details can’t be shared just yet, the next game in the series is going to be “substantial”.

“We’re making a new Resident Evil,” Nakanishi said. “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after 7. But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”

Resident Evil 9 (or whatever it ends up being called) has allegedly been in the works since as far back as 2018, and as per reports, is going to have the longest development cycle and largest budget ever for a Resident Evil game to date. It will reportedly make use of RE Engine’s new open world tech, which was introduced in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Recent leaks claimed that Resident Evil 9 was hit with an internal delay, and is now targeting a launch sometime in late 2025/early 2026. Beyond that, Capcom is allegedly also working on remakes of Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica, though rumoured remakes of Resident Evil 1 and are apparently not in development yet.
