PS6 Backwards Compatibility Suggested As Possible Reason Limited PS5 Pro CPU Improvements

1 month ago 51

The leaked PS5 Pro specs has revealed that the CPU only features a somewhat small improvement over the original model, and AMD insider Kepler has suggested that this is due to the console being made with PS6 backwards compatibility in mind.

In case you missed it, the PS5 Pro CPU reportedly offers a 10% increase over the regular PS5 thanks to a High CPU Frequency Mode, which means it can clock in at 3.85 GHz. However, Kepler speculates that this could be due to Sony keeping things in check for backwards compatibility for its next home console.

The way Sony handles BC is very complex, and it requires the new HW to run at the same or higher clock speed, even if the new HW is faster at lower clock speeds. If they are using Zen6 dense cores for PS6, they can’t target 4GHz+ for the PS5 Pro as that could break BC.
