With the recent news that Overwatch 2 story missions would not be free, it has now been revealed they won’t be coming for a while.

This year has not been the most successful year for Blizzard’s Overwatch 2. With news that its original plans for PvE were being scrapped and replaced by just a few paid story missions, fans have been less than impressed.

Now it has been revealed that said story missions won’t be coming for several seasons.

Overwatch 2 Will Not Release Paid Story Missions Any Time Soon

This news comes courtesy of a recent Twitch livestream which saw executive producer Jared Neuss talk to professional Overwatch player, Emongg

It wasn’t long before talk turned to the elephant in the room – PvE story missions.

“Don’t expect the next round [of story missions] in the next season and the season after that, or anything like that,” Neuss revealed.

“It is very much like trying to find that balance between getting [story missions] in front of players quickly because we love story stuff, and giving ourselves enough time to make changes or add features.”

Later on in the stream, Neuss spoke about the team’s upcoming plans.

”To be fair, there’s a bunch of stuff that we want to do next year, or that are already in development for next year, that will fill the gaps that people will have in between.

We’re trying to make it so that it doesn’t feel like ‘and then there’s nothing’ for a long extended period of time. It’s more like ‘there’s this cool thing!’ and ‘there’s this other narrative thing’, ‘there’s this other narrative thing’ – we keep telling interesting stories and moving that all forward.”

Invasion

Until then, players can expect Invasion, Overwatch 2’s first set of three story missions this August. This will include an all-new PvP mode as well as a new hero added to its ever-growing roster.

Players will be tasked with defending new maps based on Rio de Janeiro, Toronto and Gothenburg from the dreaded Null Sector by teaming up with friends.

However, despite Blizzard promising that Invasion will feature “complex objectives, and an in-depth storyline,” it will still cost you money to play.

Although gamers are no longer strangers to in-game transactions, Overwatch 2 fans are unhappy as PvE was originally said to have come with the base game. Now they will be expected to pay anything from $15 in order to unlock the new content.

It is set to be a crucial few months for the Overwatch community with many fans already boycotting the multiplayer game.
