The Mario movie is already on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing video game film ever

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all-time imminently.

According to the latest figures from Box Office Mojo, the film has grossed $437,946,600 worldwide since its release on April 5.

That means it’s on course to surpass the box office record held by 2019’s Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (which grossed $449,762,638) in under two weeks.

Having recorded the top opening for an Illumination (Despicable Me and Minions) film and the largest movie launch of the year to date, the Mario movie is expected to surpass $500 million in the next few days.

Actor Chris Pratt, who voices Mario in the film, suggested in a recent interview that The Super Mario Movie could the first part of a long-term project consisting of multiple films.

“You saw the movie. It really honours the video game, it honours the world of Mario and it’s very promising as to what we could expect over the next 10 years, like an entire universe of these types of movies,” he told ExtraTV.

“They’re super nostalgic, they’re really fun, it’s Illumination so they know what they’re doing, and it’s great because – especially for me, now that I have kids, I have to see every animated movie whether it’s good or not, so I’m really grateful when a great animated movie comes out, and that’s what this is thankfully. And hopefully there’ll be more.”

While it’s off to a fast start at the box office, the Super Mario Bros Movie has divided viewer opinion.

Among professional critics, it currently has a 58% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It appears to be doing notably better with movie-goers, however, with over 10,000 verified reviews on the site delivering a current average score of 96%.

VGC’s own Super Mario Bros Movie review called it the best video game film yet.

“The Super Mario Bros Movie may not take any major risks, but it’s a faithful adaptation of the games and will appeal to children and fans of the series alike,” our critic wrote.
