Minecraft Legends development is ending 9 months after its release

Development of Mojang Legends is ending, Mojang has announced.

Co-developed by the Microsoft-owned studio and Blackbird Interactive, the multiplatform action-strategy game was released in April 2023.

“Since launch, we’ve listened to community feedback and implemented a series of changes and tweaks to make the game better. With that complete, we’re now going to take a step back from development,” Mojang said in a blog post published on Wednesday.

The game’s final new content arrives this month in the form of a new Lost Legend challenge called Snow vs Snouts, and a free Bright-Eyed Hero skin, which is available to claim now on Minecraft Legends Marketplace.

While no further content will be developed for the game, the title will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future.

“Our existing Lost Legends challenges will remain available for free, and you’ll still be able to reap the rewards if you claim victory,” Mojang said. “We will of course continue to offer technical support to players, and we won’t be removing any functionalities or features from the game.

“PvP and co-op will also remain fully functional, so you can continue playing whether you prefer to take on the piglins by yourself or battle alongside (or against) friends.”

Mojang also ended support for dungeon crawler Minecraft Dungeons in September 2023.

Co-developed with Double Eleven, the multiplatform game was released in May 2020 and attracted 25 million players, according to the studio.

Given its relatively short post-launch content support, Microsoft Legends likely had a much smaller player base.

“Thank you for following along this heroic journey and helping us make Minecraft Legends the game it is today,” Mojang said in today’s update.

“With the support of our team, our partners, and the Minecraft community, we’re going to continue exploring the types of games we’re passionate about and bringing new experiences to the Minecraft universe.”
