Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater — Everything We Know

2 days ago 20

It’s close, I promise. Been a minute since we got our hands on a new Metal Gear game. Hideo Kojima, creator of the legendary series, parting ways with Konami definitely has had an impact on the dry spell fans have been put under since Metal Gear Survive (2015). But anytime now, Konami will be delivering Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater to our doorsteps.

Sure, the upcoming game will be a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004), one of the best titles in the series, way ahead of its time. But we’ll take whatever we can get at this point, with the new game definitely adopting more up-to-date gameplay. That said, shall we see what’s officially confirmed and what’s still under wraps for now? Here’s everything we know about Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

What is Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater?

Snake Eater — Everything We Know

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is an upcoming action-adventure stealth game. It’ll be a remake of 2004’s Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, the fifth entry in the legendary Metal Gear series. However, while it’s the fifth entry, the story it tells places it as the prequel spanning the origin of the iconic military operative Snake. As such, Metal Gear Solid 3 has always been known as the first chronological game in the franchise, making it an appropriate start for a remake.

Furthermore, many Metal Gear fans crown the 2004 title as the best in the series, pushing the PlayStation 2 console to its limits. Indeed, the game felt way ahead of its time, and with the remake, we only stand to finally bite into its full potential.

Story

Just as Metal Gear Solid 3 unveiled the origin story of the iconic military operative Snake, so will the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. In fact, the storyline is likely to remain intact, with Konami placing focus on launching a modern but faithful reimagining of the plot and gameplay.

If anything, the graphics are more likely to change, with the remake making use of the power of Unreal Engine 5 to convey more intricate detail and vibrancy. The trailer releases alone indicate a revamp in the visuals. At its core, though, you’ll still be returning to the world of Metal Gear amid rival nations vying for power.

It’s come to your attention that rival nations are developing weapons for mass destruction. So, you set out to dismantle their devious plans for war. However, being a mostly one-man operation, walking in the shoes of a military operative, Naked Snake, you must infiltrate enemy bases unseen.

Cue Metal Gear’s prominent stealth gameplay. From the trailers, we see Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater’s deep jungle settings return. You’ll use leaves and mud for camouflage as you infiltrate enemy camps. But you'll also engage with survival elements to sustain your health and life in the wild.

At the end of the tunnel lies the main goal: to stop the rival nations from triggering a full-scale war—the biggest yet the world has ever seen. According to Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’s Steam store page, the story will be set in the 1960s, intertwining battle ideologies.

“Relive history as the Cold War and geo-political landscape change,” the page states.

Gameplay

We don’t quite have all the information on the gameplay you can expect. The Steam page says that players will engage with survival mechanics in the jungle. You’ll also rely on your instincts to outsmart enemies, using camouflage to sneak behind them undetected.

Moreover, you can expect close-quarters combat, often initiated by sneaking behind enemies and incapacitating or killing them. The former may allow you to interrogate them for intelligence, while the latter, well, it clears a path for you to proceed.

From stalking, climbing, hunting, and treating injuries, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater plans to infuse survival and combat to create wholesome gameplay.

Meanwhile, you’ll spend plenty of time in the jungle, facing natural threats. Making too much noise could alert predators to your presence. On the other hand, you can set up traps to catch both enemies and prey.

Development

Konami is currently working on developing and publishing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. We first caught wind of the announcement at Sony’s State of Play May 2023 event. Since then, we’ve received consistent updates, including the retention of the voices of the original actors.

Also, you’ll be able to choose between “Modern Style” controls with a modern, third-person perspective and “Legacy Style” controls with a classic, top-down perspective. Stay tuned for more updates sure to pop up over the coming months.

The first Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater official announcement trailer released at May 2024’s State of Play event set the stage for what’s to come, baring cinematic animation of the jungle setting. The second Unreal Engine 5 official trailer, released in October 2023, gives us sneak peeks into the gameplay. But we also have the third, most recent, official gameplay trailer, pulling the curtain back some more on the core gameplay.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

 Snake Eater

It’s currently unclear when exactly Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is likely to drop. The trailers don’t indicate the release date, leaving us to speculate that the game may drop later this year. We can at least confirm that the upcoming game will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms via Steam. Current-gen consoles, I’m afraid, will miss out on this one.

Meanwhile, you’ll have the option to choose between Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s Editions, with the latter two offering exclusive items like “steel bookcases, custom patches, and a “Terrarium Diorama” of the Dremuchij region tree.”

For now, feel free to add the game to your Steam wishlist to get a notification when it drops. Alternatively, follow the official social media here to keep track of updates. Better still, stick with us right here on gaming.net for new information on all things gaming.
