Magic: The Gathering – MagicCon Chicago preview the next four sets for 2024!

2 months ago 103

The next Standard set is the long fabled western inspired plane of Thunder Junction. Oko is back and he’s assembling a team of infamous outlaws to pull off the greatest heist Thunder Junction has ever seen. He also has some of my new favorite words on a Magic card ever printed, “If you’ve committed a crime this turn.” What does committing a crime mean? Any time you target your opponents or any of their stuff (spells, permanents, graveyard, etc.) you’ve committed a crime. It turns out we’re all criminals.

I would have argued that combo players were committing the most crimes. It turns out I was wrong.

Befitting an outlaw posse Thunder Junction will also feature Wanted Poster Showcase Frames:

Outlaws of Thunder Junction will also feature a bonus sheet encouraging players to be their best bad self. All of the cards on the bonus sheet will encourage you to commit crimes. This bonus sheet will feature a special Breaking News Showcase frame.

So what is the heist that Oko’s gang is trying to pull off? There’s a vault at the center of Thunder Junction containing all kinds of new treasures. Called The Vault or The Big Score these forty cards take up the slot The List would normally have in Play Boosters for Outlaws of Thunder Junction.

The last card Wizards showed off for Thunder Junction is a fan favorite character, but they left us to guess what the rules mean. Fblthp is once again lost in the multiverse, but we will have to wait to find out what the plot keyword means when Thunder Junction arrives on April 19th.

Fblthp, Lost on the Range in normal and extended frame

Modern Horizons III feels like a greatest hits selection from across Magic’s history. Originally from Magic Origins, Modern Horizons III will feature double faced cards telling the tale of how some of our favorite characters became planeswalkers. Modern Horizons III will also be coming to Magic: Arena unlike its predecessors.

One of Magic’s most terrifying villains also returns with new cards, the Eldrazi are also in Modern Horizons III and their presence can be felt across all of the basic lands for the set.

Fetchlands return with reprints of the allied fetchlands. These cards are staples of mana bases across every format they are legal in and any reprints of fetchlands are always welcome.

Polluted Delta in Normal, Borderless, and Retro frame

Other returning mechanics include energy originally introduced in Kaladesh and a focus on colorless mana for the Eldrazi.

Scurry of Gremlins and It the Heralds the End

The Modern Horizons sets are opportunities for Wizards to add existing cards to the Modern Format and Modern Horizons III will be adding some powerful cards into Modern and, last but not least, Modern Horizons III has some new cards that are love letters to old cards.

Priest of Titania, Psychic Frog in normal and borderless frame

Wizards showed off new details for the Universes Beyond Assassin’s Creed set featuring a one hundred cards, eighty of which are brand new. Your favorite characters from across the setting will be featured on cards such as Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Freerunning allows you to cast your spells for a reduced cost if you’ve dealt damage to an opponent with an assassin or your commander this turn.

Fitting for Assassin’s Creed, the designers have scoured all of Magic’s history for fitting reprints for the set.

Three reprints for the Assassin’s Creed set

Because Assassin’s Creed features real world historical figures, for the first time in many years Magic will have cards referencing actual historical figures. These cards will even have serialized versions in their native script.

Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh in normal and serialized frames

A great way to start playing Magic; The Gathering is the Starter Kit and there will be a Start Kit for the Assassin’s Creed set.

Ezio, Blade of Vengeance and Eivor, Battle-Ready found in the Assassin’s Creed Starter Kit

Bloomburrow will be the second set to feature no humans. All of the characters are anthropomorphized animals. The story of Bloomburrow follows Mable recruiting a team of heroes to save their world from the elemental calamity beasts. Here we can see the different frames that will be available:

Mabel, Heir to Cragflame normal frame and the Cragflame token

Lumra, Bellow of the Woods in normal, borderless, and Field Notes frame

Bloomburrow will also feature seasonal full art basic lands showcasing the world of Bloomburrow throughout the seasons.

One last detail Wizards left us with about Bloomburrow is that when a planeswalker comes to Bloomburrow they transform into their anthropomorphized version.
