Although opening chests is a good way to get hero items, you can buy several. Iron Man, who roams around the mobile armory near Grim Gate, sells his Combat kit, which Fortnite considers a hero item. Similarly, you can find Captain Jones near the Nitrodrome and buy the Captain America shield.

Your last option for getting hero items is waiting until mid-match to open Stark mobile armories.
