Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement guide

Want to know how to use the Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement and what purpose it serves? Fans of the Harry Potter books will know of the Room of Requirement since we were introduced to it in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. However, it makes its first appearance in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as a chamber that presents itself whenever a person truly needs it.

Thankfully, you do meet the requirements of needing its services in the RPG game since you are a Hogwarts student catching up on several years of missed witchcraft and wizardry education. You need to play a fair bit of Hogwarts Legacy to unlock the Room of Requirement, but you are eventually introduced to its many features by Professor Weasley, one of many Hogwarts Legacy characters who help you settle into this new magical lifestyle. Here’s everything you need to know about the Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement.

Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement - the door to the Room of Requirement appears on a blank wall near the player character, who is dressed in Hufflepuff robes, a scarf, and a trilby hat.

How to unlock the Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement

To unlock the Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement, you need to progress through the story until you complete the first of the Ancient trials. In the next wave of main story missions, you’ll get a quest from Professor Weasley to meet you in the Astronomy tower. Go through the level until you find the house-elf, Deek, and the Room of Requirement will slowly transform into a less chaotic version where you can tinker with it to your heart’s content.

Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement features

Inside the Room of Requirement, you can customise its look by casting Hogwarts Legacy spells to make new decorative items. These require  Moonstones to conjure, and the larger the object, the more stuff you need to make it. Once placed, you can change its colour and size at any time with the Alteration spell you can learn from Professor Weasley, and you’ll get a portion of your resources back if you decide you want to get rid of it. If you want to change the lighting of the Room of Requirement, talk to Deek and select from one of the available options.

Desk of Description

Already in place when the Room of Requirement transforms, this allows you to identify any gear you loot from chests or enemies that require it. This action requires no resources, and each gear you identify will, at the very least, come with a filled trait slot.

Potting tables

In addition to the plant pot allocated to you in the Herbology classroom, you can place different-sized plant pots in the Room of Requirement. All recipes come from the two plant shops in Hogsmeade.

  • Dittany – small plant pot with a ten-minute growth time.
  • Mallowsweet – small plant pot with a ten-minute growth time.
  • Mandrake – small plant pot with a ten-minute growth time.
  • Knotgrass – small plant pot with a ten-minute growth time.
  • Chinese Chomping Cabbage – medium plant pot with a 12-minute growth time.
  • Shrivelfig – medium plant pot with a 12-minute growth time.
  • Fluxweed – large plant pot with a 15-minute growth time.
  • Venomous Tentacula – large plant pot with a 15-minute growth time.

In addition to the small plant pots, you can eventually buy some conjuring recipes from Tomes and Scrolls to get bigger pots to grow larger plants, composters to produce fertiliser, and chopping stations to periodically produce plant ingredients.

Potion stations

While you do have a single potion station in the Potions classroom, you can produce more of them faster if you set up a few in the Room of Requirement. You can find all of these concoctions in our Hogwarts Legacy potions guide. In addition, with the help of recipes from Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade, you can also make larger potion stations to make more brews at once, as well as Hopping Pots to produce a random potion periodically.

Material Refiners

Once you buy the recipes from Tomes and Scrolls, you can also conjure Material Refiners to periodically produce moonstone.

Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement - a wizard standing in front of a Graphorn - a giant creature with horns and tentacle mouth.

Vivarium

This feature isn’t unlocked until after completing your first Beasts class and retrieving the Helm of Urtkot for Lodgok. Once you do, you’ll receive  a few owl letters, one of them from Professor Weasley saying that Deek has something to teach you about Hogwarts Legacy beasts. Head there and talk to Deek to begin capturing magical critters. When you return, a greenhouse-like structure will appear at the other end. This peaceful realm within a realm is where you can release them into a sanctuary, where you can care for them as if they were your pets.

You can give these fantastic beasts treats, groom them, and even give them a little pat. Decorative structures can be altered with magic, just as they are in the Room of Requirement itself. There are also more functional items, such as beast feeders and breeding pens to keep your creatures satisfied until your return, and toy boxes filled with balls to entertain your critters. Feeding and grooming your pets will earn you items that you can use at the Loom to upgrade your equipment.

Loom

Once you have released the beasts in the Vivarium and gathered some resources from the animals, you’ll unlock the ability to make a loom. This allows you to upgrade your clothing by applying traits you’ve found in loot as you play the game. These include protection from damage against specific monster types such as Dugbogs, goblins, or trolls, which require items such as Puffskein Fur to enhance, as well as base upgrades that need materials such as Fwooper feathers, Jobberknoll feathers, Mooncalf fur, and many more. An item’s requirements depend on its type and rarity, and you can upgrade each item a total of three times and add a slot upgrade for the slot level indicated in the weapon’s upgrade screen.

Now you know how the Hogwarts Legacy Room of Requirement works, you can explore a little more about the campus in the open-world game. Start off by orientating yourself and looking at the Hogwarts Legacy map, so you know where to find Hogsmede and other important landmarks. The creator of the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling, has made a number of transphobic remarks on social media in recent years. Warner Bros. has the licence to make games based on Harry Potter. While the details of that deal aren’t publicly known, and WB Games says “J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game”, it is likely that, as the creator and owner of the Harry Potter IP, she will earn royalties from its sales.
