Helldivers 2 has started well on Steam, with a concurrent player record higher than any previous PC port of a PlayStation Studios game.

According to SteamDB, the game’s peak concurrent player count is currently 81,840, which was achieved at 10pm ET on Thursday / 3am GMT today.

This gives it a higher peak concurrent player count than God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, The Last of Us Part I or any other Steam game published by PlayStation Studios.

The current top 10 peak concurrent player counts achieved by PlayStation games on Steam is as follows:

  1. Helldivers 2 (81,840)
  2. God of War (73,529)
  3. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered (66,436)
  4. Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition (56,557)
  5. The Last of Us Part I (36,496)
  6. Days Gone (27,450)
  7. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (13,539)
  8. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection (10,851)
  9. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (8,757)
  10. Helldivers (6,744)

Although the game’s PC launch numbers are seemingly cause for celebration at Sony, it didn’t get off to the perfect start in terms of player satisfaction.

Shortly after the game was released on Thursday, reviews on the game’s Steam page were graded ‘Mixed’, with only around 52% of submitted reviews being marked as positive.

The general consensus among the negative reviews appeared to revolve around server issues and the game’s tendency to crash, with some players tying the latter to the game’s use of nProtect GameGuard anti-cheat software.

Since then, however, the tide appears to have shifted somewhat, and while the game is still tagged as ‘Mixed’ on the Steam store its ratio has improved, with around 68% of reviews now showing as positive.

Announced during a PlayStation Showcase event last May, Helldivers 2 was initially scheduled for release in 2023 before being delayed, adn was finally released on Thursday.

The sequel to 2015 PS4, PS3 and Vita game Helldivers, it takes inspiration from military sci-fi like Starship Troopers, and has a focus on co-op play.
