Has Riot Games Canceled Its MMO Project? Here's All We Know

1 month ago 61

The release of Riot Games' much-anticipated MMO has been a hot topic of debate for quite a few years now.

However, fans have some big news coming from the publisher about the MMO project and the foreseeable future.

In 2022, former Riot Games developer Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street caused quite a bit of social media outrage when he announced that there was no guarantee that the highly-anticipated League of Legends Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) would actually release. Since then, there have been some ups and downs about the MMO, some news promising while most not so positive.

The publisher announced that it was going to be "resetting" its MMO project after initially announcing it back in 2020 with its various other projects including the now-famous Valorant first-person shooter.

Here's all you need to know about Riot Games MMO and whether or not it is being sunset.

What's the Future of the Riot Games MMO?

On 20th March 2024, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill announced on Twitter that after a lot of reflection and discussion, Riot Games has decided to reset the direction of the project some time back.

However, Merrill confirmed that the title would still continue to be in development, making it clear that it is not being canceled fully. Marc Merrill added that the company replaced the MMO's executive producer and that Vijay Thakkar, who previously held that position, has been moved to become the project's technical director.

Merrill said, "The initial vision just wasn’t different enough from what you can play today. We don’t believe you all want an MMO that you’ve played before with a Runeterra coat of paint; to truly do justice to the potential of Runeterra and to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre."

He acknowledged that this change in direction of the project would prove to be a big challenge but confidently stated that its team filled with deeply passionate MMO players and development veterans are motivated to take it on.

However, there is a bit of an unfortunate news. Given the situation the development is in, Merrill stated that the team would be going dark for a long time. He added, "Resetting our development path also means we will be "going dark" for a long time—likely several years. This silence will help provide space for the team to focus on the incredible amount of work ahead of them."

The team asked for fans to trust them and be patient and understand that there is work being done behind-the-scenes.
