GreedFall 2: The Dying World — Everything We Know

1 year ago 118

GreedFall 2: The Dying World signals the return of one of 2019’s most overlooked action RPGs. Once again, developer Spiders will be returning to pilot what can only be described as a prequel that not many would’ve openly requested, but would gracefully embrace with open arms nonetheless. And that’s just it—GreedFall 2 is arguably B-list material at best, and yet, in the strangest of ways, it encapsulates a lot of quality material that numerous fans of the RPG genre are overjoyed to unravel.

It’s still a fair ways off yet (that’s according to Spiders, at least), but fortunately for us, its creators haven’t been overly quiet about the whole thing. With that said, if you’re even the slightest bit interested in catching a whiff of the upcoming prequel to GreedFall, then be sure to read on. Eager to hear the full scoop? Here’s everything you need to know about GreedFall 2: The Dying World.

What Is GreedFall 2: The Dying World?

GreedFall 2: The Dying World is an upcoming third-person action RPG by Spiders. The game itself will serve as a prequel to 2019’s GreedFall, and will be set three years prior to the events of the first. To this end, players will assume the role of a native of the island of Teer Fradee, a colonized territory engulfed in everlasting war and last-ditch efforts to restore balance to an otherwise lopsided scale.

Story

Contrary to what the first game forecast, GreedFall 2: The Dying World will draw you away from the Merchant Congregation and its attempt to colonize the Continent, and instead put you in the boots of the colonized, specifically a native of Teer Fradee. As such, your quest to restore balance will take you from the quaint island coves to the frontline sparked by tyranny and oppression.

“In this old world torn apart by war, scarred by malichor and the political conspiracies of different factions, you must regain your freedom and take back the reins of your destiny,” the official description reads in part. “Using diplomacy, cunning, or combat, as well as the help of the allies you gather, it is up to you to put an end to the ambitions of conquest of a man who could bring both the continent and your island to their end.”

Gameplay

Gameplay-wise, GreedFall 2: The Dying World will adhere to its traditional RPG format. What this means, in short, is that it will retain the fairly large open world, companions, side quests, and nonlinear storyline for you to gradually pursue at your leisure. According to Spiders, players will also have even more opportunities to carve the narrative through the power of making vital choices that both influence Teer Fradee and the Continent, as a whole.

AI companions will also receive a little more tender loving care this time around, too. That’s according to Spiders, anyway, who have made it abundantly clear that travelling sidekicks will be more dynamic than in the first game, and will have the power to make better decisions both in and outside of its real-time combat.

Unfortunately, that’s about all we know about the actual gameplay that GreedFall 2 will employ. Until Spiders decide to shed a little extra light on it, we’ll have to make the presumption that the prequel will scrub up in a similar fashion to its 2019 sequel. Who knows, though.

Development

GreedFall 2: The Dying World will be brought to you by Spiders, a studio that you may or may not recognize from the recently released Steelrising, another action RPG that received fairly positive reviews following its 2022 launch. GreedFall 2 will be the studio’s next project, and will be coming to “PC and consoles” at some stage in 2024. As for when it will release is still anybody’s guess, as Spiders has kept its launch window under wraps since first announcing it back in 2022.

Curious to know whether or not Spiders has released a trailer yet? Good news, as the studio did, in fact, giftwrap a relatively short but insightful preview just last year. Although it didn’t give a great deal away in terms of story, it did outline some of the general aesthetics, which was evidently enough to ignite some level of hype amongst fans of the original game. You can see it for yourself in the embed above.

Release Date, Platforms & Editions

GreedFall 2: The Dying World will be coming to “PC and consoles” at some stage in 2024. Granted this is a rather vague window, in general, but it’s also the only real thing Spiders has let slip since first announcing it. But if we had to put our two cents on it, we’d steer more towards the game being available for next-gen hardware only, meaning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users could very well miss the beat when it does decided to drop. Don’t take our word for it, though.

As it is still early days yet, there’s no telling just what editions will launch alongside the standard copy. If we had to go by the first game’s, though, then chances are we’ll get a Gold Edition to compliment the base game. Again, this is purely speculation, so we’ll have to hang fire and wait for Spiders to cast some light on it.

Of course, there could be some good news coming to both Game Pass and PlayStation Plus subscribers. Fact is, GreedFall did actually launch on both subscription-based platforms a year or so after its 2019 release, so seeing the prequel arrive on either isn’t entirely out of the question at the moment.
