Goodnight Universe: Everything We Know

2 weeks ago 49

Are you ready to become a psychic baby? Well, you better be ready to dive headfirst into the upcoming Goodnight Universe. According to its developing team, the decision to develop Goodnight Universe stems from the success of Before Your Eyes. As it turns out, gamers are craving interactive games that infuse evocative storytelling with facial tracking technology. While still in its early stages, we’ve compiled some vital information on the story, gameplay, and many more. Read on to find out everything we know about the upcoming Goodnight Universe.

What is Goodnight Universe?

Goodnight Universe is an upcoming narrative adventure indie game by developer Nice Dream and publisher Skybound Games. You’ll control a six-month-old baby with psychic abilities. Sounds cool, right? Well, probably not as cool as the developing team’s intent to infuse facial tracking technology into the gameplay. In Goodnight Universe’s spiritual predecessor, Before Your Eyes, the webcam captures every time you blink and signals for the story to move forward. Now, with Goodnight Universe on the horizon, the possibilities for improving on that formula seem endless. Perhaps Nice Dream and Skybound Games will break through traditional interactivity, introducing something we haven’t seen before.

Story

The core concept of Goodnight Universe is a narrative adventure that casts players into the role of a 6-month-old psychic baby. It’s unclear where the psychic abilities have come from, dubbed from a “mysterious” source. Perhaps this will infuse mystical adventures into the story.

As players guide Isaac through a world brimming with familial love and corporate intrigue, they'll unravel the mystery behind his extraordinary abilities. Set against the backdrop of a secretive tech corporation vying for control, Isaac's quest for acceptance takes center stage in this emotionally resonant journey.

Gameplay

In addition to a science-fiction twist, Goodnight Universe plans to intertwine compelling storytelling with mechanics that further enhance interactivity. It plans to tell an interactive story, which will be a “spiritual follow-up” to the eye-blinking Before Your Eyes. Merging interactive entertainment and powerful storytelling, the developing team plans for Goodnight Universe to be “yet another boundary-breaking video game.” Check out the key features to expect via Steam down below:

Key Features

  • Become a baby in a hilarious yet heartbreaking first-person narrative adventure.
  • Master your newfound psychic powers to help out around the house and also bring down an evil tech corporation.
  • Interact with a charming cast of fully-voiced characters to branch the story.
  • Mend a disconnected family.
  • Play it with your face (if you want).

Developer Nice Dream and publisher Skybound Games are currently working on Goodnight Universe. Skybound Games is known for publishing the emotional first-person narrative adventure game Before Your Eyes. It’s a game where you can control its story, including affecting the story’s outcome, with your real-life blinks. Specifically, each time you blink, your webcam catches the motion and allows for time to move forward in the game, essentially progressing through the unique adventure.

Nice Dream, on the other hand, is a Los Angeles video game development studio. It was recently formed by childhood friends and developers Graham Parkes and Oliver Lewin, who served as writers and directors on Before Your Eyes. Just like Before Your Eyes, Goodnight Universe plans to dabble its feet in the interactive narrative adventure gaming genre. In that sense, Before Your Eyes is the spiritual predecessor for Goodnight Universe, with the latter planning to add a science-fiction twist.

What’s more? While Before Your Eyes makes use of eye-blinking, Goodnight Universe plans to take the webcam technology a step further and incorporate “face-tracking.”

Parkes has put out a statement saying, “The success of Before Your Eyes showed us that there is an audience of like-minded people out there who seek out games to emotionally engage them in ways other mediums simply can’t. We founded Nice Dream Games to continue to make games for that audience that push the limits of what interactive storytelling can do.” Meanwhile, Ian Howe, Managing Partner at Skybound Games, says, “We are so excited to work with Graham and Oliver and the talented team behind Nice Dream Games again. We are incredible admirers of their creative use of technology to deliver first-of-its-kind gaming experiences.”
