Final Fantasy XVI Team Says ‘We Would Still Be In Development Right Now’ If It Wasn’t For PS5 Hardware

The development team behind Final Fantasy XVI have highlighted the importance of working with PS5 hardware with the upcoming RPG, making it clearly why there was absolutely no chance of the game coming to PS4 too.

Speaking with IGN, producer Naoki Yoshida and combat director Ryoto Suzuki offered examples on how the PS5 is able to make a huge difference, not only with visual, but also seamless load new scenes without any delays thanks to the console’s SSD.

While you’re battling Ifrit and Garuda and having that big battle [in the hands-on demo], in the background, the PS5 is loading the next scene. It’s getting ready, so we can seamlessly move into it.

You are graphically representing the fists and the claws and the wings [of the Eikon abilities] and all in real time and all in these beautiful graphics and having all of these different options. But to be able to do all of those seamlessly without any low times is possible because of the power of the PlayStation 5.

If we didn’t have the memory that the PlayStation 5 has, and also the transfer speed of the SSD that the PlayStation 5 has, we would still be in development right now.

Speaking in a separate interview earlier this week, Yoshida-san explained that he’s not a fan of the term ‘JRPG,’ which is often used to describe Final Fantasy games.

Final Fantasy XVI is scheduled for release on June 22, 2023 for PS5.
