Final Fantasy VII Remake Creative Director Reveals He Took On The Project To Prevent Someone Else From Beating Him To It

Tetsuya Nomrua, the creative director behind the Final Fantasy VII Remake project, has revealed during an interview with Game Informer that he decided to overhaul the classic 1997 PSOne classic in case someone else tried to beat him to the punch.

Nomrua-san was joined by producer Yoshinori Kitase during the interview, and recalled during the Final Fantasy XIII North American media tour that he received a lot of questions about the possibility of Final Fantasy VII being remade. This was back in 2009, six years before the project was announced at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference.

Within Square Enix, gradually, remakes were being made, and these ideas for remakes were coming up in other departments. If we weren’t going to do Final Fantasy 7, others were going to do it, so we had to rise up and do it! We had the sense that we had to guard Final Fantasy 7 and have to take this on, or someone else will do it. I thought it may be a bit troublesome is other teams without us took on the project.

“Just hearing that so many times, I did think that we would do it one day, that’s for certain,” Kitase-san added. The duo then revealed that demand from fans and the media alike had reached “fever pitch” level, and that Square Enix was “beginning to embrace” the idea of remaking titles more than before.

Square Enix did of course tease us with the idea of a Final Fantasy VII Remake back at E3 2005, when the introduction sequence was remade using PS3 hardware. However, this was just a tech demo, and was not meant to represent an actual project.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second chapter in the FFVII Remake project, is due out on February 29, 2024 for PS5.
