Last week, the long-awaited continuation of Square Enix’s journey to remake one game by making three, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth hit shelves worldwide to critical and commercial success.

That commercial success is particularly being felt in Square Enix’s native Japan, where Famitsu reports that the number for Rebirth’s physical sales cements it as having the second-best physical launch sales numbers ever for a PS5 game.

In first place is Square’s own Final Fantasy XVI, which sold a good 73,000 more copies than Rebirth on launch. Though regarding games that came out in the same week as Rebirth, it stands tall as the best selling game in the week across Japan.

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth sold 262,656 copies according to Famtisu, but despite it being an exclusive title for PS5, it wasn’t able to move the needle on hardware to get the PS5 in first place for last week’s sales.

Instead it was the Nintendo Switch topping out the week with another 62,531 consoles sold, ahead of the PS5’s 48,067.

The next best-selling console was the Xbox Series line with 2,351 consoles sold, which was only 629 more consoles than the PS4, which still managed to sell another 1,722 consoles last week.
