The Game Boy turns 35 years old on 21st April 2024, and we'll be running several features over the next few days celebrating the system and its games.

Today, George speaks with four talented individuals keeping the candle burning for the DMG-001 in the 21st century...


The humble Game Boy may be turning 35, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing new to look forward to. Far from it, in fact – the homebrew scene is thriving, with physical games available to play on original hardware seeing a resurgence in the last few years.

This is thanks in large part to an expanding array of toolsets becoming available to developers from various backgrounds. GB Studio’s relatively simple drag-and-drop approach, freshly coded games using assets from libraries such as GBDK 2020 and beyond, all coupled with a handful of companies taking up production mean that there’s never been a better time to make a game for our chonky little friend.

So, let’s meet a few folks who are doing just that — from plucky newcomer hobbyists to grizzled veterans who’ve put out multiple releases, these game makers are out on a mission to prove there’s life in the old Boy yet.
