Several Indian cities have been showcased in a variety of different games over the last two decades.
Popular titles that featured India include Far Cry 4, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Tomb Raider 3, Overwatch 2, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, etc.
Over the last decade, video games have come a long way from being a niche hobby to becoming a cultural phenomenon worldwide, including in India. The revenue generated by the Indian gaming industry is estimated to reach a whopping USD 8.6 Billion in 2027 so it is evident that our country does have a lot of gamers. While the gaming industry is growing rapidly, there are several international games that feature Indian elements, either through the setting or level designs, characters, and such. Let’s take a further look at them.
Here Are the Five Titles That Featured Several Indian Locations
Mario’s Time Machine
This educational game was initially released for MS-DOS and SNES all the way back in 1993. The game’s main focus was to teach human history. You play the role of Mario who uses a time machine and travels through time returning various items that Bowser stole, in order to ‘correct’ the timeline. The game featured Kolkata where people are shown to be celebrating India’s independence in harmony. It also showcased Mahatma Gandhi who attempts to raise India’s new flag in honor of their independence, when it is stolen by a time-traveling Bowser. Players who control Mario travel back in time with the flag in order to return it to its rightful place.
Battlefield 2042
Even though Battlefield 2042 features several maps, one that stands out is the map named 'Discarded' which is based on a town in the Bhavnagar district in Gujarat. The place named 'Alang' is spread across a coastline where there are enormous abandoned ships. The actual town is considered to be the world's largest ship graveyard. Players battle it out in between these hulls while adapting to deadly storms which provide an immersive Battlefield experience.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six was initially released back in 1998. The game featured an expansion pack named Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Mission Pack: Eagle Watch which added several new missions along with weapons and multiplayer modes. The expansion introduced players to many iconic locations around the world and one among them was the Taj Mahal, where players would engage in strategic combat as part of their high-profile operations.
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist
Splinter Cell Blacklist featured several missions that were based in India. The co-op missions featured begin with Sam and Briggs infiltrating Kashmir, where they follow a group of smugglers connecting them to a Russian Intelligence organization called Voron. The later part of the game also featured the city of Bangalore where they set up a friendly mission base further investigating the activities of Voron agents.
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin was released back in 2002 for PlayStation2, Xbox Game Cube, and PC. it featured Agent 47’s reluctant return to action due to treason. The game showcased several locations such as the city of Punjab to kill high-ranking members of an Indian cult. Since then, several Indian locations have been featured in a lot of Hitman games including the latest Hitman 3.
