What is Deep Cuts?

Big parrot

Deep Cuts is an upcoming cinematic horror virtual reality rescue mission game. It plans to mash up messy physics, storytelling, and intricately detailed worlds. Set in the Scythe Saga universe, the new game aims to send chills down your spine, ushering a new chapter for the books. With the minds behind Happy’s Humble Burger Farm at the forefront of development, Deep Cuts seems to be shaping up to go down in memory among the best horror VR experiences out there.

Story

You’ll be the star of your own show, stepping into the shoes of a film director. Taking control of the character Elise Weber, you’ll discover that your job as the co-founder of film production studio Lights Camera Faction (LCF), may be a little more than what you bargained for. Soon, things go awry over at the film sets. Your cartoony creations crave blood, thrusting you into an epic quest to rescue your best friend and creative partner. You’ll trek further down into different stages, reliving some of your studio’s most iconic and cinematic moments on set.

From the 80s horror set inspired by Forsaken Festival to the 70s space thriller set inspired by Origin Drill, you’ll explore diverse live-action scenes. Each one will have interactive objects you can grab and improvise as a melee weapon. But you’ll also get your hands on ranged guns, including a machine gun. As Deep Cuts’ steam store page phrases it, you’ll “gain superpowers” that allow you to battle against “a maniacal group of deprecated and deadly cartoon characters – The Learning Lads.”

Deep Cuts plans to infuse several genres, blending a mix of storytelling, exploration, and combat. Get ready to unearth hidden secrets and solve intricate puzzles. As the star of different shows cum the films' director, you’ll have the power to determine just how gory the LCF studios are going to become. Steam has been gracious enough to let us peer into the key features you can expect in the final game.

  • Physics action: Switching between brutal melee and frantic ranged combat, you’ll tackle different enemies. The new game promises a “dynamically interactive” system that sees you switching between diverse weapons and navigating “highly responsive environments.”
  • Deep lore and environmental storytelling: LCF is hiding secrets and it’ll be up to you to uncover them. You’ll unravel a compelling backstory, while also discovering “beloved movie genres and tropes.”
  • Neurareel film experience: By starring in your show, you’ll immerse yourself in live-action scenes. The sets will vary from 1980s horror to retro futuristic sci-fi to spaghetti western and film noir. All the while, you’ll be switching between different protagonist roles, unwinding a generous blend of life and art.
  • Time manipulation abilities: Beyond starring in your own show, you’ll also step into the shoes of a film director. But in a neat twist, you’ll be able to speed up editing in ways that allow you to navigate obstacles, solve puzzles, and even set up traps against enemies.

Development

Scythe Dev Team in partnership with tinyBuild is currently working on Deep Cuts. Scythe Dev Team is most known for developing the first-person adventure horror restaurant management game, Happy’s Humble Burger Farm. An unsettling story with effective satire? Ridiculous cooking simulation with well-thought-out fast-food mascots? Sign me up, please! The studio will no doubt bring their playful and unique take on horror to the new game, anticipating a just-as-thought-provoking experience as their previous work.

Meanwhile, tinyBuild has a wealth of experience. Their catalog sure is backed up with Secret Neighbor updates in the pipeline. The tinyBuild Connect 2024 showcase added more announcements, trailers, and demos. From Level Zero: Extraction to Sand to Kingmakers, and many more upcoming projects, tinyBuild will have its hands full these coming months. Yet with successful hits like Hello Neighbor, SpeedRunners, Graveyard Keeper, and more, Deep Cuts couldn’t be in better hands.

You are thrust into a movie theater, with an eerie atmosphere looming over you. A movie screening titled “Bastard Town” splutters glass on your face, cueing all manner of horrific events. Faceless enemies, gigantic mascot monsters, everything diabolical goes.

Go on now, dust off your Meta Quest, PSVR2, and SteamVR headsets: Deep Cuts will be arriving anytime now. Meta Quest owners will be first in line, with the release window set for this Fall. PSVR2 and SteamVR owners, on the other hand, will have to wait a little bit longer, with the current release window slotted for 2025. It’s unclear when exactly the PSVR2 and SteamVR versions will arrive, or the Meta Quest version for that matter. But we’ll surely clear the cobwebs the closer we veer toward the respective launch windows.
