1 week ago 38

A coffee shop always has people from all walks of life. Now, imagine if you could listen to their thoughts and respond. Imagine if you could connect with all types of people, all while sharing a cup of hot coffee. With relaxing conversations and hot coffee to quench your thirst, Coffee Talk returns with a new spinoff set in Tokyo. It’ll have people and Yokai meet in one spot, sharing deep conversations to the tune of immersive Lo-fi beats. Here’s everything we know so far about Coffee Talk Tokyo.

What is Coffee Talk Tokyo?

Blue

Coffee Talk Tokyo is an upcoming visual novel game. It’s the spin-off to the coffee brewing and heart-to-heart talking simulator Coffee Talk, which has a sequel, Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly. Both games have garnered a loyal following who feel drawn to their moody rainy settings and therapeutic conversations. With the upcoming game, Toge Productions plans to bring back the heartwarming dialogue from the first two games. You’ll experience warmth from strangers you meet at an all-new coffee shop in Tokyo. To keep the conversations going, you’ll brew delicious drinks for your customers, serving both human and Yokai characters alike.

Story

As the name suggests, Coffee Talk Tokyo will take place in Tokyo. The city will be animated in paper and steel. But interactions will all happen in a small, all-new cafe in the city. Here, humans and Yokai walk through the doors of your cafe, looking to quench their thirst. Different customers will have different order requests, and your job is to fulfill their needs as best as you can. The summer heat will be at its optimum, pushing customers to drop by your cafe for refuge. However, while your customers settle into your cozy cafe, they will spark conversations with one another. Relationships will bloom as they share heartwarming and personal tales. All along, conversations will unravel to the immersive beat of Lo-Fi music.

Gameplay

Making an order

Unlike the two previous games in the series, Coffee Talk Tokyo takes you to Tokyo. You’ll interact with a diverse cast, from young and old to human and fantasy creatures. Moreover, the new spin-off will borrow familiar gameplay from the previous two games. However, you can still look forward to some new twists. Here are the key features the upcoming game will feature:

Characters

You’ll take on the role of a Barista at a small, all-new cafe behind a skyscraper in Tokyo. The ambiance and overall setting will feel familiar to Coffee Talk and Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus and Butterfly. However, the characters and conversations they share will all be brand new. Some of the characters you can look forward to include:

  • Kenji: An older man who gets by on a meager salary. He struggles with finding meaning in life while also eager to find a way forward after retirement.
  • Vin: Your assistant, who happens to be going through a tormented past. A disaster has happened in his life that has spun consequences in his daily life.
  • Ayame: While she appears to be a happy girl, she has recently died. In the past, she was the “it girl,” and now she has to define a new path in the afterlife.

Brew Coffee

Your job as a Barista will be to brew coffee for your customers. To gain excellent reviews, you’ll design exciting latte art using sprinkle stencils. The mechanic will need you to sprinkle the powder on coffee that engraves a particular design. Then, further enhance your latte art with extra milk and etching.

Lo-fi Music

Composed by Andrew “AJ” Jeremy, you’ll brew coffee and listen in on deep conversations to the tune of Lo-fi beats. You have probably already heard AJ’s music from the previous games in the series. The talented artist returns to bring a set of new tracks that will doubtlessly immerse you in a chill and relaxing atmosphere.

Tomodachill, a Social Network

As your customers connect with one another, you can track their interactions on the Tomodachill social network application. The app will reveal different characters’ stories to you. It’ll help you find ways to bring happiness to your customers by fostering potentially fruitful connections and uncovering the meaning they are seeking in life.

Development

Toge Productions and Chorus Worldwide are currently working on Coffee Talk Tokyo. At the recent Nintendo Direct 2024 event, the developing team was excited to share their thoughts about the game. “We’ve been hard at work over the last year to come up with a story that retains the core elements Coffee Talk fans are fond of but at the same time brings something new to the table,” the team shares.

Trailer

Coffee Talk Tokyo - Reveal Trailer

Coffee Talk Tokyo’s official reveal trailer is out now on YouTube. It showcases some of the characters you’ll interact with. Each character battles with a life-altering thought, leading to some profound conversations. Yet the characters also seem to grow the more they share with one another. You’ll unravel diverse storylines that inform one another. Meanwhile, the music is top-notch, immersing you in a relaxing atmosphere.

You can definitely spot familiar gameplay from the first two games in the series, which is perfect: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The only gripe may be the setting, which, without the rainy backdrop, may lose its melancholic touch. Still, stellar writing from the trailer, and doubtlessly in the final game.
