Welcome to the world of secret agents and spies

Codenames, the digital version of the popular board game, is now available on Android and iOS
  • Inspired by popular board game from 2015
  • Same mechanics plus several new game modes and upgrades
  • Available for $4.99 on the App Store and Google Play

Codenames, the popular board game by Czech Games Edition, has finally landed its digital version on mobile. The tabletop title, which was originally released in 2015, quickly became a hit at parties. Now, you can enjoy the same entertainment in the palm of your hand without having to carry the game with you. Are you ready to enter this wordy game of secrets and spies?

If you haven’t played Codenames before, it is a word association game where two teams fight to contact all their agents before the others. You have a spymaster, whose one-word clues must be deciphered correctly in order to join all the right words to communicate with your agent. The mobile version does exactly this in an optimised way so it’s just as entertaining.

The mobile version works asynchronously with your opponent. You must link as many words as possible with a single clue before your opponent to become victorious. You can play both solo or with your buddies as you try to outsmart other secret agents. You have up to 24 hours to play your turn, so you can make moves at your convenience without having to worry about time running out.

All the original mechanics are naturally part of the game, but this digital iteration comes with a few bonus features as well. A tonne of new thematic words and twists in gameplay have been added. You can take part in different game modes, unlock upgrades, while also collecting achievements. There’s something for both casual and competitive players.

As you progress through the title, your spy agency will level up and you will earn numerous rewards along the way. The better you get, the more gadgets and word collections you will unlock. Brag about your skills and show everyone what it’s like to be the ultimate spymaster.

Codenames is available on the App Store and Google Play for a premium of $4.99 or local equivalent. If you want to know more about the game, then check out our in-depth review of Codenames.
