Blood Bowl 3: 5 Best Tips for Beginners

1 year ago 129

Forget football. Blood Bowl 3 is a step higher, for better or worse. None of the rules matter, except for the obvious ones. How else will you scream “victory” except when your team makes it safely through to the end of the field, and scores that coveted touchdown? By “safely,” I mean exactly what the word implies. You are to use every weapon in your arsenal in your corner, whether it’s fists, weapons, horns, a body frame, or anything that can knock your opponent off their game, so you speed past them, leaving blood and bruises in your wake. It’s clear that Blood Bowl 3 isn’t the easiest game to play, let alone win. But, with these Blood Bowl 3 tips for beginners, you’ll have an advantage over the rest. Let’s go.

5. Pick the Winning Team

 All Teams

Sounds easier said than done, but picking the winning team is probably the one thing that often sets apart winners from losers in Blood Bowl 3. Naturally, you’ll find select teams excelling that much faster than others and scooping lots of wins, too. Since the game offers up to 12 starting teams, it can seem overwhelming to choose which one to take out for a spin. However, a few starting points are to check out a team’s starting skills and stats. Some teams are deliberately less powerful than others, perhaps to give “coaches” the option to challenge themselves, or otherwise.

Generally, the lesser powered teams include the humans, dwarfs, dark elves, and elven union. On the flip side, the skaven, orcs, and black orcs make a pretty strong team. Beginners, in particular, may want to gravitate toward the orcs. They lack any animosity. Plus, they’re faster-paced and better balanced compared to the often popularly selected black orcs team. The starting skills are great too, equipping you with strength and mobility and providing much appreciated room for making a few mistakes as a newbie.

4. Learn the Lingo

At first, it may seem like a whole new world is just starting out. Thanks to years upon years of active development, Blood Bowl has evolved and received tons of editions to become what it is today. So, if you’ve never given the game a try, you’ll likely feel submerged in the lingo, which is different from other fantasy football games. You’ll run into somewhat familiar words like “big guy,” “block,” “catcher,” “thrower,” and the like, plus some maybe unfamiliar ones like “turnover,” “mercenary,” “cage,” “blitz,” and more.

Learning these words is crucial, so you know what to do when they come up. It’s also the first step to mastering the game. Fortunately, none of the lingo in Blood Bowl 3 is particularly confusing, and in a few minutes, you’ll find yourself relatively well-versed to start playing a new game.

3. Set Up Your Team

Here’s where learning the lingo comes in handy. You’ll be asked to set up your team, with several options to choose from. Make sure to pay special attention to the team setup process. After all, there’s no game without the players, and hence, their vital role in the game. In any game, you’ll find a team has 11 players, with the option to buy extras for up to 16 players.

Make sure to keep track of how much you’re spending, because your stash can run out quickly if not managed well. A common occurrence is to spend all your money buying the best players available. Others choose to place their bets on cheap players, such that they have too much gold left over than necessary.

2. Manage Your Team Wisely

Our advice is to buy the players you feel won’t let you down, while leaving enough gold for at least two rerolls. To help you decide how to manage your team in the setup process, here’s a quick guide to the different players available.

  • Blockers – You can think of blockers as your warriors whose sole role is to defend your team from attack. They typically have higher strength, and wear heavier armor to resist any incoming attacks. They’re also great body guards for the rest of your team.
  • Blitzers – Often, blitzers blitz really well, while also acting as great blockers. So, you could try to kill two birds with one stone? They’re great for running at a high pace, and if need be, hitting hard the opposing team, pushing them away, or removing them entirely from the field.
  • Throwers – These guys pick the ball up first and pass it to the runners.
  • Runners – Typically fast-paced, runners secure the bag for you by quickly picking up the ball, holding it, and running very fast across the enemy’s side of the field to score that touchdown. Though keep in mind they aren’t great blockers at all.
  • Catchers – Also quite like the throwers, they catch the ball or intercept it, and run it to the endzone.
  • Big guys – These guys aren’t always available to all teams. The ones that do offer exceptional strength, with almost always a negative skill attached. Plus, they’re usually just one guy per team, and cost a small fortune.
  • Linemen – They’re the cheapest players available, which also means they have the least skills and the lowest stats. So, our advice is to buy them only when you’d like to save money, or to fill up slots you can’t fill otherwise.

1. Play Smart

From here on out, it’s up to you to channel your football instincts and play smart. Like always following up on a block to keep the fight going. Is it worth putting that kind of pressure on your opponent, or does it just open you up to vulnerabilities.

There’s the turn timer to keep an eye on. Also, try not to leave your side of the field unmanned. But, overall, Blood Bowl 3 is all in good fun, so make sure to have fun on and off the field.
