As noted in our review, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is such a triumph because it gives players the choice to be whatever they want to be without any restrictions. If you ever wanted to star in your own Game of Thrones epic, then Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is just the ticket. You’ll wage war, battle in arenas, trade illicit goods and even dabble in diplomacy in what is one of PS5’s most ambitious games available – albeit one that takes the notion of the real-time strategy genre and enlarges it to involve both RPG and open-world genres like never before. Technical niggles aside, this is one of the best PS5 strategy games money can buy.
2. Frostpunk – Console Edition
From 11-Bit Studios, the same developer that brought us the morally challenging survival sim This War of Mine, comes Frostpunk – a sprawling city-building effort that expands the scope and premise of the Polish studio’s previous effort substantially.
As the governor of a small township of displaced survivors after the world enters a second ice age, it’s up you to carve out an enclave of your own in the mountains where your citizens can live and thrive. However, there’s more to this strategy effort than just foraging and building, as you’ll find yourself frequently having to institute new laws and deal with a variety of moral quandaries as you balance the survival of your people with your own conscience. Frostpunk is essential stuff.
3. Company Of Heroes 3
Marking the return of WWII RTS games to PlayStation consoles, Company of Heroes 3 certainly makes its mark on PlayStation 5 as one of the better real-time strategy efforts. When you’re not taking the fight to the Axis powers in the dynamic campaigns, Company of Heroes 3 also provides a wide range of skirmish and multiplayer modes for players to get stuck into, but really it’s in the ever-changing and non-linear conflicts that the dynamic campaigns provide that will provide Company of Heroes 3 players with the most meaningful reasons to return to Relic’s PS5 debut effort after the credits have finished rolling for the first time.
Though Company of Heroes 3 might lack some polish and its implementation of a console-friendly control system takes a good while to get used to, Relic Entertainment has nonetheless crafted a layered World War II RTS that combines meaningful tactical choices and consequences with compelling street-level strategy that just begs to be revisited time and again. Armchair generals should rejoice.
4. Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew
Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew puts players in the bewitched boots of undead privateer, who, in an alternate history take on the Golden Age of Piracy, must travel the width and breadth of the Lost Caribbean to assemble a crew of perished pirates (and a sentient ghost ship, no less) in order to defeat a zealous sect of anti-undead fanatics led by archvillain Ignacia. Right away, the premise of Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew feels fresher than it otherwise would, not least because in a neat twist, the undead folks are actually the good guys, whereas the living are, for the most part at least, a bunch of weapons grade jerks.
Honestly, it feels churlish to chide Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew for being too similar to Mimimi Games previous output, not least because this enormously talented studio has a track record of kicking out superb stealth strategy offerings and has once again fashioned a relentlessly engaging tactical stealth effort that is absolutely at the apex of the genre. With Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew however, I’m not sure the concept has ever been executed with this degree of charm and that’s something Mimimi Games should be roundly congratulated for.
5. Spacebase Startopia
Spacebase Startopia combines classic real-time strategy dustups with a dollop of humour, with players balancing economics with empire building. As commander of three space station decks, players must work to create the most attractive trade and tourism hotspot in the universe, while sabotaging your competitor’s efforts by attacking their enemy or taking the fight to the with your trusty Mech Units. All your actions are watched over carefully by a the dynamic narrative AI known as VAL, who reacts to your decisions with a razor-sharp tongue. If you don’t fancy the single-player campaign, then drive into the competitive and cooperative multiplayer for some four-player space-bound antics.
