For many gamers, the Age of Mythology was the pathway to the world of the mythos. Greek, Egyptian, and Norse legends from far and wide interlaced to bring forth one of the best real-time strategy games of all time. 

It’s been some 20-something years since the original Age of Empires launched in 2002. Now, the franchise is ready to make a comeback in a more contemporary world. The best part is that you won’t have to wait too long to take charge of the gods of the franchise. With a release date confirmed, we can now start the countdown. What is Age of Mythology: Retold?

Age of Mythology: Retold is an upcoming real-time strategy game. It’ll be a ground-up remake of the original Age of Mythology (2002), which is a spin-off series of Age of Empires. With over 20 years since the original’s launch, the remake is bound to push the latest-gen hardware and software capabilities to their limits. Moreover, it’s highly likely we’ll also play through some new twists and features that newcomers and veterans alike will appreciate.

Story

Based on Age of Mythology: Retold’s Steam description, the upcoming game plans to draw inspiration from mythology, portraying a story that unravels a full-blown battle of the gods, monsters, and human beings alike. It’ll borrow the best elements of Age of Mythology (2002), adding modern real-time strategy elements and new graphics. 

Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime, discovering an epic and innovative playthrough curated for veterans and newcomers alike. Players will kick off by choosing their domain. Thereafter, they’ll command legendary monsters, mastering the diverse range of powers of the gods to claim victory.

We’ve been lucky enough to get a deep-dive overview of the gameplay you can expect in Age of Mythology: Retold. Check out the key features below.

  • Call upon the gods – You’ll choose between gods from the Greek, Egyptian, Norse, and Atlantean mythologies. Each god will have unique abilities that lean into different play styles. Some will have lightning abilities that you can summon, while others will have the power to impose earthquakes on enemies. You can channel heavy rainfall on enemies and even tap into protective abilities that lead to your people’s prosperity.
  • Unleash the monsters – You’ll command legendary monsters, also of a diverse range. There’ll be centaurs, mummies, trolls, and more. Each monster will have unique abilities, like the crocodiles who can wield the power of the sun and the cyclops who draw inspiration from the legendary myths.
  • An epic mythological universe – Like Age of Mythology (2002), you’ll take on multiple campaigns. In total, the upcoming game will have 20 missions spread out across a vast, fantastical world. From the famous walls of Troy to the sands of Egypt, you’ll embark on adventures across diverse biomes. Some missions will be discovery-based, while others will be sieges against giants.
  • Better with friends – In addition to the single-player campaign, you’ll also access the co-op multiplayer mode. It curates head-to-head battles against human players or advanced AI. These will take place across randomly procedurally generated maps and scenarios, paving the way for limitless replayability.

Development

 Retold

Developers World’s Edge, Forgotten Empires, Tantalus Media, CaptureAge and Virtuous Games and publisher Xbox Game Studios are currently working on Age of Mythology: Retold. In a marketing video, art director Melinda Rose recently revealed, using augmented reality, some of the newly revamped unit models you can expect in the final game, alongside the official cover art. In the video, she says that the team will not only be “upgrading the engine and bringing all of the quality of life improvements that you’ve come to expect from World’s Edge, but in addition to that, we’re doing even more to upgrade the art. That means all-new 3D models, all-new animations, textures, UI, VFX, the whole sha-bang.”

Age of Mythology: Retold – Xbox Games Showcase 2024

You can watch the Age of Mythology: Retold riveting trailer revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 event in the video embedded above. While it doesn’t go too deep into the story and gameplay, it does give us glimpses into the environments and characters we can expect in the final game. We see Mount Olympus, Odin’s Temple, Trojan Horse statue, among other mythos references. We also see the magnificent earthquake abilities you’ll be able to channel, among other exciting gameplay. Best of all, we get glimpses into some of the gods we’ll be playing as, including Isis, Loki, Zeus, fire breathing Niddhog dragon, among many more.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

It’s official. Age of Mythology: Retold will launch on September 4, 2024. So, only a few months away now. Also, you can expect the upcoming game to launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC platforms via Steam. If you get an Xbox Game Pass subscription, you can download the game from Day One. As for the other platforms, only time will tell whether ports are due. Meanwhile, you do have the choice between the Standard, Premium, and Premium Upgrade editions.
