Anyone who knows me knows I am not a big fan of the concept of game of the year lists. I cannot tell you what I played in January and the list of games I play, not for work, can be counted on one hand. The list of games that I actually have consistently come back to is even shorter.
This year, there have been a lot of games that I have spent time playing; Monster Hunter Now, Neopets Faerie Fragments, Pokemon TCG Pocket, and Monument Valley 3 to name a few. But the moment that I get busy, I have put them down.
But, 2024 was fantastic for Pokemon Go when it comes to both events around the world and running local events for our community. You see, Niantic opened up the Community Ambassador program and this year they've really been refining it! As an official ambassador for the Pokemon Go Harlow community, we've really grown and helped our local area over the year.
Niantic challenged ambassadors to clean up litter in a local area and our community has been gathering food bank donations, giving out in-game rewards to everyone who participates. We've had a fantastic time battling in Raids together, celebrating Shiny catches, and taking on Shadow Pokemon. There was an entire 10-day block of events being hosted every single day. Our community feels like that; a community of people who love playing together.
Amelia is a huge lover of Pokemon Go, and Robin has been into the Dynamax Raids, which has added a lot of fun to our family adventures. They both are also collecting cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket. It's quite fun connecting with younger family members through a mutual hobby.
I also got the fantastic opportunity to go to Pokemon Go Events this year; Go Fest Madrid being a massive highlight. The entire place was buzzing with other trainers, all playing together. It was fun seeing some of the players from my local community there as well. Pokemon Worlds, though a card game-focused event, happened in London - and again I had a fantastic time cheering on members of my own community taking on Go Battles against others.
Pokemon Go has become more than a game for me, it's a community of like-minding people and I love playing with them.
