The Midnight Walk: Everything We Know

3 weeks ago 39

Well, it seems developers never run out of ideas. There’s always a new game that surprises us with its unique take on visuals, gameplay, or just the overall concept of the game. With The Midnight Walk, it’s the visuals from the trailer that steal the show. I mean, the music score and voice acting are all top-notch, too, and the story seems like it’ll be interesting. However, the graphics stand out the most, oozing with spooky charm. And rightly so, given they were created from actual clay. Are you curious to know what else the developers have in store for us? Here’s a deep overview of everything we know about the upcoming game, The Midnight Walk.

What is The Midnight Walk?

 Everything We Know

The Midnight Walk is an upcoming dark fantasy adventure game. Its unique selling point is that the graphics have been handcrafted entirely in clay. While the concept may sound bizarre, the trailer proves it's a pretty spectacular idea. You enjoy such vivid details of the horrific monsters you’ll encounter. Plus, the world itself morphs in such intriguing ways, with an aesthetic that makes your skin crawl—in a good way, of course.

A Steam page is already out now. It describes the game as a dark adventure following a lost lantern. You’ll make friends with the lantern and help them navigate a world filled with darkness. As the only source of light, you’ll experience the wonders of the game’s world firsthand. But the horrific creatures of the night will also inflict terrifying moments. Still, you’ll brave your way through the scary midnight walk and outwit the monsters that threaten to kill you.

All along, you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping environments, all handcrafted entirely in actual clay before being animated in stop-motion.

Story

In The Midnight Walk, you’ll control the Burnt One, a lost lantern called Potboy, whose dimming flame must take you into the endless night and overcome the fears that leap from the shadows. Your small flame will light up your pathway, even as you take in wondrous biomes and horrific monsters just the same. So, get ready to survive the midnight walk with the darkness at its peak and the monsters out for blood. And yet, with wits, you’ll trudge through five story parts of fire and darkness, running into a host of weird and strange characters.

Gameplay

The Midnight Walk’s gameplay seems to have two main parts: a thrilling story of light and darkness and adventuring through a compelling handcrafted world. As Potboy, you’ll navigate the ups and downs of the midnight walk trail. But you won’t be alone, as companions will join you. They will help you outwit monsters looking to burn out your flame. Your companions may use their flames to distract the monsters, allowing you to hide and escape the threats of the world. The more you play, the more terror you’ll experience, but also the stronger your will to go on.

On the other hand, you have a beautiful world through which to adventure. It’ll be packed with fire-eating monsters with ghastly drools and bodies. But there’ll be trees, too, albeit modeled in real clay. All of this can be experienced on the screen or in virtual reality.

Development

Developer MoonHood and publisher Fast Travel Games are the awesome team that will be bringing us The Midnight Walk. Fast Travel Games seems excited to be launching the game sometime in the future with the release of the reveal trailer and the description that reads: “We are proud to team up with MoonHood and bring you The Midnight Walk.”

As it were, MoonHood already has experience developing adventure games, with their most popular title, Lost in Random, gaining positive traction. The developers at MoonHood have also worked on Fe and Ghost Giant. All of these titles have virtual reality and adventure, among other gameplay elements, that will doubtlessly influence the making of The Midnight Walk.

But it's the innovative concept behind the art style of the new game that has piqued the interest of many gamers. MoonHood plans to craft a grimdark world handcrafted with actual clay. In fact, everything you’ll see in the game will be a product of clay modeling, whether the drool of terrifying monsters or wading tree leaves. After modeling, the developers scanned their creations in 3D, capturing the most intricate details. In the end, they were able to display a layered world that has impressive artistry, as seen from the trailer.

The Midnight Walk | Reveal Trailer

Check out the reveal trailer for The Midnight Walk here. It’s a pretty impressive first sneak peek into what MoonHood has been cooking for us. The visuals are a pleasant delight, and it’s pretty exciting how they will translate into VR. But the music score is also stellar, with the temptation of replaying it over and over. And then there’s the voice acting, which sounds deeply immersive. The narrator holds your attention throughout, which I imagine will be much better while playing the actual game. Hopefully, a gameplay trailer will be released, though, with actual in-game footage to give a better sense of what your playthrough might look like.

Release Date, Platforms, & Editions

The Midnight Walk will launch sometime in 2025. Unfortunately, MoonHood has yet to reveal an exact release date. However, publisher Fast Travel Games confirms that the new game will launch on PlayStation 5 and PC platforms via Steam, as well as PSVR2 and PCVR.

The virtual reality component is definitely exciting, especially with the already impressive visuals showcased in the trailer. We could be in for a wild ride if you can bear with some clay getting on your headset lenses. Excitement aside, you might want to add The Midnight Walk to your Steam or PlayStation wishlist to get a notification as soon as it drops. Or you could follow the official social handle here for more updates on the development of the game.
