Even though it might seem like everyone and their mother has bought Grand Theft Auto V, developer Rockstar saw another 5 million people just in this last fiscal quarter buy a new copy of the game that has spanned three console generations.
The last time we got an update from Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two on how many copies GTA V had sold, the new number was 200 million.
Since the end of that quarter up to Wednesday, when Take-Two was going over its second quarter fiscal results, another 5 million dove into Michael, Trevor and Franklin’s story.
Of course much of the success GTA V has enjoyed doesn’t come from its main campaign, but the GTA Online gameplay that, up until a few years ago, you could only play if you bought a copy of GTA V. Now if all you want to do is purchase the online portion, you can – but that clearly isn’t stopping people from picking up the only GTA game for the last decade.
But the thing that’s probably driving GTA V sales more than ever is the fast-approaching launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. If you don’t already have GTA V but intend to grab GTA VI, it’s easy to see many grabbing the title for a lark since it is discounted so often.
We know now that GTA VI is set to launch sometime in Fall 2025, which means that we’re actually getting quite close to the launch of a game many thought might never happen, since GTA V had been so successful.
It’ll be interesting to see if GTA VI is able to overcome GTA V in terms of sales, and if so, how fast it gets there.
