Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed once again, developer Ubisoft announced in a press release. Now, instead of the game releasing in just a few weeks on February 14, 2025, it’ll instead be arriving on PS5 and PS5 Pro on March 20, 2025.
This is the second major delay Shadows has gone through, after being pushed from its original November 2024 release date into February 2025. Last time, Ubisoft cited the disappointing reception to Star Wars: Outlaws as the reason it wanted to give Shadows a little more time so that it could “further polish the title[Assassin’s Creed Shadows].”
It’s a different story this time, with Shadows being pushed back now amid Ubisoft taking in the results of “strategic and execution reviews initiated by the Executive Committee a few months ago.”
The release continues, “As part of the renewed focus on gameplay quality and engaging Day-1 experiences, it has been decided to provide an additional month of development to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. This additional time will allow the team to better incorporate the player feedback gathered over the past three months and help create the best conditions for launch by continuing to engage closely with the increasingly positive Assassin’s Creed community.”
Chief executive officer of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot adds “We made good progress on the strategic and execution reviews initiated a few months ago and are confident that this will position Ubisoft for a stronger future. We have taken decisive steps to reshape the Group in order to deliver the best-in-class player experiences, enhance operational efficiency and maximize value creation.”
“We also recently appointed leading advisors and are actively exploring various strategic and capitalistic options to unlock the full value potential of our assets. We are convinced that there are several potential paths to generate value from Ubisoft’s assets and franchises.
Additionally, we are all behind our teams’ efforts to create the most ambitious Assassin’s Creed opus of the franchise and made the decision to provide an extra month of development to Shadows in order to better incorporate the player feedback gathered over the past three months that will enable us to fully deliver on the potential of the game and finish the year on a strong note.”
Guillemot is of course referring to the fiscal year in the last line of his statement, since a new fiscal year will begin at the beginning of April 2025.
Executive producer on Assassin’s Creed at Ubisoft, Marc-Alexis Côté also published a statement to the official Assassin’s Creed account on X, where he says “we believe a few additional weeks are needed to implement the feedback and ensure an even more ambitious and engaging day-one experience…We remain committed to delivering a high-quality, immersive experience-fostered by ongoing dialogue between our players and development teams.”
2024 was an abysmal time for Ubisoft, to say the least. Its big free-to-play shooter, XDefiant started off strong, only to fizzle out to the point where Ubisoft pulled the plug before the end of the year. Both Skull & Bones and Star Wars: Outlaws missed the mark on what the company needed each game to do financially.
And there were multiple points throughout the year where shareholders were putting pressure on the company to make major changes, with one of the biggest points being the call for Yves Guillemot to be ousted from the company his family founded.
It’s clear that there’s a lot riding on the success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. 2025 is a make-or-break year for Ubisoft, and it’s likely that the company will look very different by the end of this year.
