The last big system software update for the PS5 brought a number of cool features to players, like a Welcome Hub that can be personalized however you like with various widgets, the ability to create a personalized 3D audio profile, Party Sharing, and ads right on your dashboard.
That last part is in fact not cool, something a number of players have pointed out. Since the update went live earlier this month, players have noticed that when hovering over a game on their home page, an ad relevant to said game highlighting the latest “Official News” will appear, rather than the art from the game meant to accompany it.
What’s worse is that there’s seemingly no way to disable it without just turning off your console’s online connection – but according to Daniel Hiatt, senior product manager at PlayStation, players can take a deep breath. Because these ads aren’t a new feature, they’re a bug.
“Everybody settle down; it’s just a (new) bug with an existing feature,” Hiatt said on Twitter in response to an IGN story about the ads and players displeasure of them.
Thanks to Hiatt’s confirmation, at least we now know to expect a fix for this bug in coming updates. Now if only PlayStation can add themes and folders to the dashboard’s UI, then we’d be cooking with gas.
